lmwilla 21 Posted June 6, 2016 So I am scheduled for surgery in 6/20!!! I am so excited and ready to be healthy. Yesterday, my whole family was together and my aunts were asking about the details. They are super supportive! All of the sudden my Grandpa (who is a 78 year old retired Dr.) says "well you better do something, your face is almost unrecognizeable from how round it's gotten". Wow, talk about getting hurt......... 14 more days (and trying to use his comment in a positive way)...... heidikat72 935 Posted June 6, 2016 ugh what a horrible thing to say to you. Try your best to just ignore his comment. At least your aunts are supportive. Congrats for making the decision to regain your health!
Babbs 14,681 Posted June 6, 2016 Grandma's and grandpa's are known for their bluntness sometimes. Use this story as your motivation after the surgery. Then say to your grandpa "Look! My face isn't as round anymore!"
Christinamo7 4,042 Posted June 6, 2016 bah. older people tend to say whatever comes to mind. I am sorry he said that out loud, and I pray you don't give it the power to hurt you beyond the initial scrape of hearing it. my husband's grandfather (God rest his soul) used to tell me NEARLY EVER TIME I SAW HIM that I was a beautiful woman, but I'd be gorgeous if I lost weight. my typical reply was how lucky for me that his grandson thought I was gorgeous no matter my weight and I didn't really care for the general opinion of society, and that I was only trying to loose weight to have more years with him. lmwilla 21 Posted June 6, 2016 I am definitely not going to dwell on it. The initial sting hurt, but I know he didn't mean to hurt me. I won't give anyone's words the power to derail me Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
rubia72 200 Posted June 8, 2016 Some people say things that hurt but I'm convinced that most don't even realize that their words cut us like a sword:(
Harsha 168 Posted June 8, 2016 I also think people say things that are trying to be supportive, but are hurtful. Like, wow.. you'll be so beautiful after you lose the weight. What, am I troll right now? I'm already beautiful, I want to be healthy! Sent from my SM-G925V using the BariatricPal App
