VSG in July, needing advice

Recommended Posts

I am sure there are many of you out there that have been through the surgery and had families. I have been trying to do little things here and there as I prepare for my upcoming surgery date but I would love some ideas on how I can best keep up with my family as well.

My son is only 19 months and still sleep in his crib, so lifting him up for naps during the day and being able to get down on the floor and play with him, etc.

Another on of my biggest concerns are keeping up with making meals for my family (obviously they are not on the liquid/puree diet).

really any advice on this would be great. My husband has been a huge support for me and I want to make sure that I am doing my best to make him feel loved.

thanks everyone!

Yo shouldn't be lifting him right after surgery, and getting down on the floor might be difficul for a week or so

Hi Amanda,

This wasn't an issue for me, but I've seen others here talk about it. Basically, you'll probably want to lower his crib mattress to the lowest possible level, and teach him to climb in and out with the side lowered. Start now so that it's a habit when surgery rolls around.

I know other people also teach their toddlers to climb in and out of their car seats rather than being lifted in and out of the car.

You'll probably need to brace yourself while you get up and down from the floor, and move very slowly, but it can be done.

Surgery is very tiring . . . if your husband can take charge of meals, or at least some meals, for a few weeks, I am sure that would be a great help to you. If you can afford to hire someone to come in and clean for a couple of hours a day, watch the baby while you nap, and maybe fix a light supper for your family, that would also probably be a good option to explore.

Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
