How Often Do You Weigh Yourself?

For the first ten months after surgery I weighed only once a month, on my surgery date. I think this helped because a) it meant I didn't really notice stalls B) the weight loss was usually a good, big number and c) it kept me from obsessing. As long as you're following the rules, the weight will come off. Now that I'm almost 15 months out I weigh once a week. I was told you shouldn't weigh daily because there are a multitude of factors that affect the number on the scale, many of which are completely out of your control.

I started out weighing daily but realized that I was obsessing too much about the number and becoming worried when my weight loss wasn't as much as others here at BP. I am now not weighing myself at all. I get weighed at my appointments with the Nurse Practitioner. I just had my three- month post surgery check-up, and will have another appointment in another three months.

I am in the camp that weighs daily. I'm just about 3 months out. I have to say (and I'm surprised by this) - I'm not obsessing over the numbers. My nutritionist and NP suggested weighing daily for the first few months, as it would highlight any possibly concerns/issues if I wasn't losing or gained, etc. My weight loss is slowing somewhat, but I just had my 3 month post-op today and I'm down 75 lbs since surgery March 16 and 104 lbs down since October when I had my first information session. And he told me he expects me to lost around 40 more lbs before all is said and done. So I weigh just so I know where I'm at. But I don't stress if the number stays for a few days, or, god forbid, goes up a half lb if I'm bloated or the like.

Just stay the course - as they keep telling me, everyone's different. Find what works for you and make that your new norm. That's the term my surgeon used with me today. He said "Welcome to your new normal". And that just struck a cord. Good luck!

I'm two years out from surgery and over a year into maintenance. I've weighed myself every single day since surgery. That's the only way I can keep an eye on things and make necessary adjustments. In the past 6 months my weight has gradually increased by 3-5 pounds, but I'm able to keep it in my acceptable range by working at it every day. If I bury my head in the sand for a week or a month, I'm afraid I'll get on the scale one day and have to lose 15 or 20. That's WAAAAAY harder than 5!!!

Research has shown that weighing daily is important for weight loss and weight loss maintenance. You can play games and avoid the scale, but the numbers do not lie. Be brave and embrace your scale!!!

Nope, you're the wrong one posting about living.on the scale with "research." Not everyone should be on the scale every damn day. I am post op, and I know I can't do that to myself. I weigh in at the doctors office. I stick to the plan but I was posting on what happened everytime in the past. I'm not the only one that has done that with stalls.

I'm not sure what problem you have with @@Icantbelieveit but I see nothing wrong with this post. What was so stupid and irresponsible? (It seems to me you have this backwards).

Icantbelieveit was obviously trying to be funny.

The bigger issue here is the sentiment behind the joke. I am 1 year out from surgery and at goal weight. I know too well that you have to have your head in the game to succeed. Bariatric Pal has been a wonderful resource during my journey. We all come here for advice and support. No one needs jokes about giving up at any point. That is why I hated Icantbelieveit's post. The post wasn't helpful in the least.

@@CharlotteKat I think you are reading something into this that wasn't there. The post was about getting on the scale daily is not helpful to her - if she doesn't lose or is in a stall - it can derail her. What's so wrong about saying that?? Not everyone is the same - we don't all have to follow the same exact process. What works for you might not work for us!

I also think that it is more than appropriate to have some levity - personally I enjoy a joke every now and again! I'd rather a joke than someone referring to another person's post as "stupid" and "insensitive".

Folks, like it or not, you really should get on the scale daily. The research shows the positive effect of doing this.

Your way doesn't mean it's the right way to do things...

A lot of people do get discouraged by a stall and get off track, so if weighing everyday doesn't work for them it doesn't mean it's wrong.

And I think the post was quite funny as I can relate to it.

BP is about people trying to succeed but it's also about keeping it real with our own personal experiences

I've been weighing myself once/month since having RNY. I made a conscious decision to do this so I wouldn't obsess over the scale. It's been working well for me and I actually look forward to my monthly weigh in.

I'd like to know how often you weigh yourself, and why. I've been reading about stalls and how they last for days to weeks. I haven't noticed this with monthly weigh in's. Wondering if I should pay more attention to this. I'm 6 months post RNY.

Unfortunately I weight everyday (I am still pre op though). I hope I am able to not be so scale obsessed post op and just focus more on my diet and how I feel.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
