Question about dumping

Recommended Posts

So... I'm 9 years post - band and awaiting a surgery date for RNY - I didn't realise I had any issues apart from GERD until we did a fill under x-ray/fluro and found a massively dilated oesophagus ????, all of a sudden it was empty band, a worried surgeon and talking 'other options'.. I've never been so miserable!

Anyway I'm getting all set for the revision and I'm fine with the potential complications. .. BUT has anyone had a dumping experience at work or in public - that's my only fear...

The bypass was my only option. I was worried about dumping but it really hasn't been an issue for me. I avoid foods high in sugar and fat though. I also avoid drinking with my meals. When I first went back to work I took an emergency bag of extra clothes but I never needed it. :) Good luck and best wishes with your RNY surgery!

I have not experienced it, but dumping is actually an intended consequence of eating things that you shouldn't. I've had people, including medical professionals, say that it is something you might have happen to you once or twice, but you feel like you're going to die and it's so bad, that you never do that again. And there's nothing you can do to get rid of the symptoms, you just have to ride it out. Good luck and I hope it never happens to you!!

Thanks - an 'emergency bag' might give me a little peace of mind. I just don't want to cause a fuss or get embarrassed at work.

Hi I have been researching bypass as I have to have my band out as having so many issues and now have regained all weight I lost with band so moving to bypass as soon as I can. In one article I read they advised not to try anything new when going out always test at home first so hopefully you won't put yourself in that position. Same advice with alcohol I believe.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
