Sugary Sweetheart 97 Posted June 19, 2016 (edited) I work in a school and spoke to the school nurse about my surgery. If I needed assistance would she help me? I was encouraged by her nice comments about how I'm taking my health into my hands and doing something about my diabetes, high bp and high chol. She was extremely positive. On the other hand, I see coworkers whispering about me (in a most obvious way) including ones I only see on occasion. I understand the curiosity but why not just ask me, don't gossip! One teacher made it a point to say to another teacher (very loudly while I was in her presence) how she HAS TO go to the hospital with her sister who's getting a Tummy Tuck because she's "TOO LAZY to eat and exercise correctly"! When I left the room, I heard them laughing. I spoke to my boss to let her know about my surgery in case it hindered my time frame going back to work and she smiled and said she couldn't wait to see me after summer vacation and "watch me waste away", which I know she meant in a somewhat positive way. I know some coworkers are just mean spirited and need to laugh at my situation but that makes me even more determined to be successful, and lose tons of weight, so I can smile and enjoy my extended, healthy life! Cocojh 62 Posted June 23, 2016 I sure have. we are short staffed and I got a lot of the lousy jobs/shifts assigned to me and generally treated poorly due to some people (my supervisor included) not being pleased that I went out on FMLA for my surgery. after all this time it has settled down and sorted out - and I have a perfectly effective working relationship there - but I won't forget. see, I view this surgery as being needed and perhaps even saving my life. they viewed it as an elective choice and I should have waited 6 months or so until other positions were filled and trained. Sad, but I have this reaction from some co workers as well. I view it as a life saving/changing decision as well. Avettgirl 13 Posted June 24, 2016 I am returning to work on 6/27--Monday. I work at a skilled nursing/retirement community. I have co-workers who have had WLS. My direct supervisor is the one who has given me grief about my surgery. She controls it all. I am worried about this same type of retaliation. I had another nurse ask me why I would have this surgery if I could lose on the pre-op diet. I explained to her I can only lose so much on my own and then I re-gain. The worst comment--"I hope you are gonna stick to this since you are going to so much trouble!" Crazy. People feel very free to comment. I paid for the surgery-and I didn't make the decision lightly. 10 years I contemplated about this life change. I'm so glad I finally made the choice. Good luck to all!
