I month out... Appetite returns

Recommended Posts

One month out and finally onto solids.

About 3 days after returning to work I noticed that my appetite returned and every 2 hours I feel hungry and keep feeling an urge to eat.

I eat about 1/4-1/2 cup of food or purée and get filled (more solid the quicker) but I'm bummed that I'm constantly hungry, given that I got past mental hunger confusion around 2 weeks ago, and had no desire to eat just before returning to work

I should mention that no matter how much Fluid I drink I was still thirsty

I also returned to caffeine (not much, some)

Food amount ... The same , I just feel hungry despite drinking more fluid

Think it's the caffeine? The fact that my job has me walking and being super active ? I work in painting in a retirement home and walk constantly and for several minutes at a time throughout an 8 hour shift

I prefer no appetite. Dare I say I miss the first few weeks?!?

Are you still taking a PPI? My surgeon only prescribes a PPI for one month after surgery. Mine ran out a week ago, and I've noticed feeling a lot hungrier now. I bought some OTC antacids and started taking those, and the feelings of hunger have gotten much better since then.

Or, maybe you just need more food now than you needed at first. I eat every two to three hours, and am between 500-700 calories and 80-100 grams of Protein daily.

Even at a month out, it is unlike those nerves have reconnected at the stomach.

As @@judanna77 asked, are you taking a PPI? Acid can feel like hunger.

Are you hungry for anything or just one thing, like a cheeseburger? If you are hungry for just one thing, that is head hunger not real hunger.

Also wanting to eat and needing to eat are 2 different things.

I'm pretty sure a PPI is for blocking tummy acid. I think the other members are asking you because sometimes excess acid mimics hunger.

Also, have you tried more dense Proteins? I'm almost 6 weeks out and I noticed that blended food slips right through (I thought my sleeve was too big) where dense Protein (chicken, beef) fills me up super quick.

I hope you find what works, best of luck!! :)

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
