Potential Nursing strike and surgery date

Recommended Posts

I'm scheduled for RNY June 20th. The nursing Union will be voting on June 6th to decide if they will accept the contract offer (very unlikely) or vote to strike. Should they choose to strike, the earliest they could walk off the job is June 16th. This most certainly would affect my surgery date. I talked with my surgeon who stated that his understanding is that if there is a strike - it could delay my surgery up to another 5 weeks. I have another option to move up my surgery date to June 13th if there is OR time available. I know it sounds great, but I'm having my daughter's high school graduation party on 6-12. I will have so much to do for this along with clean up that I don't know that I or my family can be ready to do this. I also don't want to put off surgery for another 5-6 weeks either so I am torn as to what to do. If anyone has some advice, please let me know. Thank you.

Your daughter can't clean up after her graduation party?

You can't hire someone to clean up after the graduation party?

Personally, if that is the only thing that is keeping you from having surgery that day I would put on my thinking cap to see if I could find a solution. There is nothing wrong with asking for help.

Do you have a specific diet for the day before? If that will impact enjoying the graduation party - then I wouldn't do it. If it's just a matter of cleaning up - get help to do that and have the surgery on the 13th. A strike might not happen even if they don't agree on a contract. But if it does delay surgery - 5 weeks will go by fast!

My opinion might be left field but historically how many times have nurses been on strike to the point it effected patient care... The hospital can't afford to shut down business... You daughter only has one graduation I feel your getting ready for the surgery don't allowed you to be as engaged in the day as you might like... I'm leaning towards taking you gamble there won't be a strike.... While the surgeon said 5 weeks, it could be sooner given the fact surgeries are cancelled rescheduled all the time... I think you feel better heading into surgery knowing your were able to enjoy the graduation party to the fullest.

Even if they don't agree on a new contract - it doesn't mean they'll strike. We often have long negotiations here but the nurses work under the old contract and don't strike.

I know this is a difficult decision but if it was me, I would have the surgery on 6/13. I have 3 children whom I have put through high school and if I threw them a party, they will be responsible for the clean up. I know what is like to make a sacrifice for our children. But, sometimes we, as mothers should put our desires first, particularly when our children can handle the situation. It sounds like you leaning/hoping the nurses don't strike. I hope they don't so everything will fall in place for you!

Thought I'd give an update. The nursing Union did vote to strike. I have moved my surgery to Monday,June 13th at 11:00 am. My husband and family will help with the clean up and return any rented items so I can move forward and not worry about the nurses strike affecting my date. Nervous but excited!

No matter what happens. I think you'll be glad you moved it. Good luck!

I am in MN too. Where are you having your surgery?

I think I made the right choice. The union has issued their strike notice effective June 19th through June 26th. .

I am happy that I made the decision to move up my surgery from June 20th to June 13th

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
