Taste changes may occur after surgery. Some people experience a "bad taste" in their mouth during the first month after surgery. This is normal and should resolve within a few weeks.

I think the cause is that your body has gone into ketosis.

Ketosis made me to not be able to stand myself. This condition lasted until I began pureed foods. It gets better every day..congrats on continued success.

I remember that taste, and I was indeed told that it was ketosis. No matter how long or how often I brushed my teeth it would never fully go away.

Until it did. And it will for you. I don't remember when exactly it was. One day I just realized that it had passed. I know it was still there 2 weeks out (looking back on chat records I'd asked a friend who'd had bypass about it around that time), but I believe it was gone by the one month mark.

I changed toothpastes... Biotene. It's made a huge difference... even my spouse noticed how bad my breath (and the tastes in my mouth) were... now I'm apparently good enough to kiss again :D

Early post op I had a bad taste in my mouth too and everything tastes terrible. Even when I was past my puréed mushy stage and could eat regular food everything tastes terrible. I would have to brush my teeth after I ate to help get the taste of food out of my mouth. I just looked at good as fuel for my body and made sure I got my Protein in.

It did go away after a few months. Now that my "honeymoon" period is long gone everything taste great and my mouth seems fine.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
