Immediately after surgery you are going to struggle to even get 500 calories a day. You will then likely work up to about 800-900 a day. About a year out and I'm eating about 1200 a day. However, in all honesty you really don't need to count calories. Just stick to your diet of Protein first and then non-starchy vegetables, stopping eating when you feel restriction.

I am week 9 and in first week of solids. Dietician told me this week not to count calories or even fat or sugar but to stick to the guidelines of what I can eat. She stipulated 60g Protein because I am tall but I cant reach that. I was convinced that I was eating too much as am like a kid in a candy shop, first week of normal food but reading other posts on here and laboriously going through my standard foods I find I am taking in about 1000 cals a day. I know the dietician said not to do it but I needed reassurance. So now that I have it, I will not count calories unless I dramatically change my food. She said half to full cup of food, maximum 5 times a day. Obviously be sensible, not cup icecream, cup chocolate. When I get elected god they are going to be health foods!

My surgeon never had me count calories. Just grams of Protein and ounces of Water. Lost over 100% of my excess weight and maintaining easily by following the basic bariatric friendly diet plan.

NUT: Up to 80g Protein, I average 50-70g, mostly 60g for me.

1/2 cup serving per meal

Calories up to 800, but I average 500-600 per day, just not hungry much lately. I didn't pay attention to calories before, however MyFitnessPal lists my daily calories.

Lots of Water

Low carbs

I try to stay away from sugar

Just following my plan, diligent with portion servings and allowed food.

I think common sense would suggest, calories aren't too important.. The idea is your eating small nutritional dense food is... Not all calories were created equally.. To me counting calories would distract your focus from Protein... Protein first!

My primary goal is getting in fluids (64 oz) and protein (100 grams for me). Calories are secondary.

@@Beck90 this is actually a more complicated area than simple counting of calories: http://www.core3training.com/7-reasons-cant-count-calorie-counting-weight-loss/

Think of it as a tool, but don't get too wrapped up in it. As others have stated, the most important thing is the source of your calories. http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/best-diet-quality-counts/

Now with all that said, I use http://www.myfitnesspal.com to track my protein/carbs/calories. I know some days I'm not going to get all my Protein in and some days I'll go over a little. But by keeping track, it forces me to be mindful of what I'm eating. I am so ADD, I'll lose track unless it is written down.

Thanks guys! That all makes sense. I'll just worry about Protein and Fluid for now.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
