Ok, I curious what people thinkof taking a bite of something and chewing it, but then spitting it out. I cannot be the only one that has thought of this.

I was released for soft/pureed foods last Thursday (I'm 17 days out)... I made some chili with a mixture of beef/turkey... I took a small spoonful of it and started chewing, but I noticed the meat really wouldn't get mushy enough for my comfort... I spit it out.

I may have done that more than once...

We've all thought about it. Trouble is? It's an actual eating disorder. I wasn't aware of that until I read about it. It can be a real unhealthy habit. And if you accidentally swallow something, it could really irritate, even injure your new pouch. Treat your pouch like the tiny, helpless baby it is. I'd avoid the chew- spit out behavior all together.

My surgeon actually suggested it. It came while discussing the desire to eat popcorn at a movie.

Waterwoman, with all due respect, that's a very unprofessional suggestion from your surgeon. Also, popcorn husks can get lodged in fresh staples. It's ludicrous he would suggest such a thing. It's a gateway to bulimia. Please don't take what you read here as the go-ahead, ssmoore. You should take to your bariatric team.

Here's a link explaining how this behavior is an eating disorder. It can cause stomach ulcers and insulin spikes! Scary! Don't take the gamble:

StephanieSparklePants, I think maybe you misunderstood. I'm talking about taking a bite, not eating and entire cake, or steak. I thank you for the link to explain your position.

I didn't misunderstand you. Unfortunately, this is a noted compulsive behavior, so the very nature of the act opens the floodgate for chewing and spitting out more than 1 bite. Many people can't limit it to one bite. And it leads them to a full blown eating disorder.

Luckily, we live in a free country where chewing and spitting out your food is a novelty, I suppose.

Any way you want to slice it, it's ultimately your decision and I wish you the best of luck with post-op life. It can be a tough road. Take care.

They discuss this very thing in the book I read about WLS. It can easily turn into an eating disorder and as @StephanieSparklePants indicated it causes digestive problems. Any Dr who suggested chewing popcorn and spitting it out needs to go back to medical school.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
