How to get in enough protein? (1 week post op)

Recommended Posts

So I am one week post op, still on liquids and I am having the hardest time getting in the 70 grams of Protein I need each day! It just doesn't seem possible! What were some of your experiences?

Immediately after surgery your body is in a major heal mode. Don't be too concerned about reaching your daily Protein requirement in the very beginning. Just keep working towards it and you will get there.

what are you drinking for Protein Shakes? For the first several weeks post op, I drank two shakes a day, and as much Water as I could stomach. My shakes were 30 grams of Protein in one scoop plus the 13 grams of protein in the 8 ounces of milk. 43 grams per 8 ounces of liquid made it much easier to get in my protein every day. :)

What Protein powder do you use? I am on the search for a good one and have tried a couple by none with 30g of protein.

I love Premier Protein, however, my doctor/NUT doesn't want me drinking it the first 6 months... they want me drinking Protein with whey Protein isolate instead of a mixture like Premier has in it. (I believe it has Milk protein first)

Now that being said, lots of doctor's approve Premier. I'm just telling it as my NUT tells me... that we can't absorb as easily.

I drink Bariatric Advantage, New Direction, and Chike. There are other's out there, and I'm going to be on the search once these are gone because I'm getting tired of them LOL

Premiere One Protein has 30 grams. I buy it from costco. It is a premixed Protein not a powder.

My NUT doesn't want me to drink Premier Protein because they don't have the best kind of protein. I actually don't like them anyway.

Thanks! I'm going to give it a try!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
