8 Days Post-Op and MISERABLE

Recommended Posts

Finally, after dealing with insurance nightmares, I was approved and surgery was scheduled for May 23, 2016. I was so excited! My surgeon didn't require any pre-op diets or requirements so all I had to do was wait.

Fast forward to today.

It's 3:00am, I can't sleep. I have GERD or esophageal spasms, or somethings going on - no idea what. Back pain and joint pain that make sleeping impossible. I feel weak, dizzy, lightheaded, and my belly itches like crazy! I'm just now able to eat pureed foods, but am scared. I have no idea how much to eat or what I should eat. I have trouble getting all my Water and Protein requirements met and I throw up after taking my Vitamins. The only plus is that I'm already down 23 pounds, and it's only been 8 days.

Please, tell me this gets better!

Help? Suggestions? Anything?

Have you called your surgeon?

I was put on an anti nausea pill and a pill from tummy spasms for my first three months because I couldn't keep anything down. I also have a slight stricture so pills would get stuck and I had trouble moving through my food phases.

Stick to liquids for now if you have to. It's not uncommon for WLS patients to be on liquids for three weeks post op. I was. My pureed stage was week three through 6, but again, I moved very slowly.

Protein drinks, SF pudding and Popsicles, Gatorade mixed with Water (unless you can tolerate G2), and as much water as you can handle.

Walk. A LOT. Take your PPI. Call your surgeon about your Vitamins, pain and eating plan as these were just suggestions based on MY experience. It will get better.

Thanks guys, actually feeling better today. After days of crying and barely being able to move, I woke up feeling ok. Started a regimen of 2 oz of my Protein shake every hour, at least that way it doesn't feel so daunting.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
