Good article about "cardio" (HIIT)

Recommended Posts

I was confused on what I should be doing for cardio, but I think I understand now. I've been at the gym for about 4 months now. At the beginning I was told not to go above a heart rate of 125...just slow and steady. Then after awhile I was told "I should bump up my cardio"...then told to add interval training....I was getting confused!! You might be too. I found this article that I thought was very good at explaining it ALL!

High Intensity Interval Training

Great Article! That is basically what I've been doing all along. Some people think that staying between a certain heart rate range is best for fat loss, but I have always thought that calories in vs. calories out. At a higher intensity, or during intervals, your burning way more calories than staying at a constant heart level. After an hour on the elliptical I can burn over 800 calories. It's unbelievable! And I must say, I sweat like crazy!

terri,

thanks for the article. now, is it enough for me to get my rear off the couch this afternoon?????

Yes, you have to actually GET UP and DO the workout in order for it to be effective. I think that's imperative.

I tried it with my swimming the other day and the HIIT kicked my ass. I could only do 1.5 laps full out...but it's an interesting yardstick.

Get up. Get your shorts and shoes on. Put one foot in front of the other until you get on the treadmill. You will relieve your guilt, you will feel better and you will be so glad you did.

Now MOVE IT!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
