Hi, I am one week and one day post-op. I have not had a BM yet, of course I am only taking G2 and broth. Is this normal? How long before you have a bm after surgery? I am not uncomfortable and I don't feel like I need to go. Just wondering.......

About 8 or 9 days passed and still nothing, it was getting uncomfortable, so I called the nurse. She said ohh, the paperwork you were sent home with said to take milk of magnesia after 4 days if no bm. It works wonders, just don't go to far away from the bathroom!

My doctor's protocol is to immediately start taking Miralax on the first day home from the hospital. He says you should be pooping every other day (3 days at most). If the Miralax didn't work I was instructed to use a glycerin suppository. Once I add back some veggies or fruit I should be able to drop the Miralax. I've been on a regular every two day schedule since day three post op.

Stay on the miralax! I was stupid, had a BM 2 days after coming home and stopped the miralax thinking i was good. Nope theres a reason there was like 50 packs in my prescription! A week later i havent been to bathroom and im DYING of Constipation. Did not know such a hell existed. Ill not stop the miralax again until its gone!!!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
