Having second thoughts 2 weeks out

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm a 57 yr. old male who has gone through all the necessary preparations and was very excited. I've had to wait a while for my surgery because my cardiologist wanted me to wait a full year before coming off my blood thinners.

Today is 2 weeks before my surgery date of 6/14 and I have been having doubt's all day.

I really need this surgery because of so many health problems.

I'm just worried about complications. I don't think l could take many more setbacks, it's been a rough 2 years for me. 2 knee surgeries and a mild heart attack.

Is this common? Has anyone had these second thoughts? Will it change?

it is common to have these concerns as surgery gets closer.

However, I was more afraid of the complications of my obesity than of the surgery. I hope to hear from you that you have made it through with flying colors.

I've had many, many thoughts about the surgery. I don't have a date, but I have had questions about my pursuit. However, as some other people said before - the minimal risks associated with the surgery, and the manageable discomfort while I recover will be totally worth going through in order to avoid the obesity related health issues I face down the road.

Best of luck to you!

Thank you for the encouragement. I look forward to the benefits of the surgery. They certainty outweigh the risks. Guess I should stop second guessing myself.

It is very common to have pre-op anxiety and jitters.

For me, it came down to me having a chance to live or choosing death sooner rather than later if I didn't have surgery,

If you haven't already done so, sit down and make a list of all the positives and negatives for having surgery and for not having surgery.

For me, the pre-op uncertainty was the worst part of the entire experience. The actual surgery, recover, and my experience over the last year has been great. I am a little over half way to goal and my life is already completely different.

Best of luck and keep us posted on how you are doing.

Thanks for your kind words. I do agree with you. I'm a new first time grandfather and complications from my obesity would surely cut my life short.

I was 62 and once I did my research (about 30 days online), I rushed into it. I had my orientation on August 10 and weighed in at 281. I immediately went on a preopt (1700 calories/day) diet.

I was 251 on October 6 for my surgery and hit my goal of 190 less than 5 months later.

This is truly a miracle, life saving surgery. My life is so much fuller and more enjoyable than I ever imagined possible.

You are blessed to be eligible - enjoy the journey!

Thanks. You are right. The other day I made a list and it's not even close! So many more positives than negatives. Today I'm going for my final pre op testing and I'm feeling a bit more confident.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
