Liquids, Liquids, Liquids!!!

Recommended Posts

I was suppose to have lapband in August, but got really weak the first day on the pre-op diet. Slimfast, Soups, and one small piece of chicken breast. I got home from work and had some Soup, then went straight to bed(weak). I work with a punch of women ready to see me fail but i decided to have the surgery9-5-07 and I just need some idea of what to substitute with the slimfast because it gives me so much gas!!:help::heh:

That weakness may be your body detoxifying from sugar build up. A drastic reduction in simple carbs will do that and it may take three or four days for it to pass. Sort of like a junkie coming off heroin!! (I've been through it several times in my life!)

 The sugar DTs that is, not heroin!!! :)

But if you saw my last post -- my surgeon almost failed to get my banding done yesterday because I'd not adhered strictly enough to the liquids only diet and my liver was still huge. What should have taken him 20 minutes took him two hours!

Sounds like low blood sugar which I suffer from. If I don't eat I get extremely weak, sweats, feel shakey. What is best to do in the case is eat some Protein. Save some of your chicken portion for late in the day. Best thing to do is eat throughout day 5-6 meals. If you are only allowed one chicken breast cut it up to last at least 2 meals with your broth. it is going to take your body time to adjust but you can do it. Do it for yourself and not for those women. They'll never know what you have been through or going through so who cares about them. Stay strong and true to yourself and remember you are doing this for YOU and not them. Make adjustments where necessary and ask doctor what is best step to help you make it through day without "passing out". I don't know if you can have this but when my sugar would drop I always ate Peanut Butter. I hate it, but it works. I am not even approved for surgery yet, but I am hopeful. Good Luck.

because you do not much to lose it will take you longer--but its great you are giong through with the band before it is any worse!! Good for you!!!! I agree with not pleasing those work women--I have lost over 100 lbs and still have 55 to go!! Protien is the answer!! This forum is the perfect place to find accurate info----PLEASE follow the rules your doc sets up--we all don't need any more drama in our lives!! Hard enough to make the decision to have lap-band let alone put ourselves in harms way by not following the guidlines...and BEST of LUCK You can do it!!!!

Redgirl,

It sounds as if you are lactose intolerant. Lots of milk will KILL you with gas and stomach cramps if you are drinking too much. Even if you don't usually have symptoms, when you are eating nothing else, it becomes really noticeable. Either switch to the lactose-free Slim Fast, or just make your own Protein shakes with the stuff you get from GNC or other nutrition place.

Hope that helps. You can do it. (It'll just bite doing it :))

Nana tell us more about your liver and surgery. I have 3 days to to and this diet is killing me...

That's about all I know, Amy. I started the pre-op on Friday, July 27th in anticipation of a August 2, surgery date. But I was sent home on that day due to a paperwork technicality.

I stayed faithful to the pre-op diet and was quickly rescheduled for August 7th. But that time, I made it to OR, but they were unable to intubate me and damaged my throat and I had to wait another week to heal. That did it -- I needed to CHEW!! I had a little tender smoked turkey, some mac and cheese and some baked potato from our favorite BBQ place for dinner that night and had a whole wheat bagel with FF cream cheese for Breakfast the next morning. Then I had some homemade Soups with not all the chunky stuff removed a couple of times.

The scale kept moving down and I thought what I was doing wasn't hurting anything. But evidently, it was enough to interfere with shrinking my liver which was the intention. I want to ask more questions from the dietician and have more facts to share.

Nana, I know that it is to shrink your liver. I just wondered why they have you do liquids instead of a diet? They told me that I would have a hard time reaching the 10lbs in 10 days because I have less to loose.

I was so hungry last night I wanted to cry. I have Friday Sat and Sun to go. This is way harder than I epected it to be. I gave up Diet Coke in March and never looked back. I had a glass 2 weeks ago and I swear it made me sick. That was really easy to give it up and that was all I was drinking. So I thought the liquid diet would be easy too. Boy was I wrong.

Hello. Instead of Slimfast, I have been using carnation instant Breakfast (no sugar added) and I mix it with a pack of no sugar added hot chocolate (make it with skim milk and drink it warm like hot cocoa). I like it much better than slimfast and it fills me up and takes longer to drink since it is hot. Good Luck...you can do it - I am on my 10th day of liquids and haven't cheated once. Don't want to chance messing things up. I've waited too long for this. Being banded 8/22 Yippeee!!!!

I use a powered whey protien drink i got from GNC health food store. I mix it with skim milk and it really helps to kill hunger. I am 23 days out from surgery and i am so grateful i have not had to much trouble with hunger. I get my first fill on the 31st of this month. Right now just having the band seems to be helping with hunger. I do drink a lot of Water and crystal light and eat a lot of suger free pops. I have lost 18 pounds so far. Donna

It is very good lose weigth in the pre-op.

The goal is the reduction of the liver for an easy surgery.

You can eat different meals, but remember the goal, lose weight.

April,

I will have surg on Aug 30th, and started my two week liquid diet on

Thursday. My diet from My Dr is as follows. Did your Dr give you a liquid diet to follow?

1. I can have 4 Liquid Protein drinks a day. must be under 200 calories, and around 20 grms Protein. I use the powder and liquid made by EAS.They are Whey protein.I find mine at Walmart and target.

2. I can consume any amount of the following liquids, sugar free drinks ie...tea, coffee, flavored waters, srystal light. broth that is reduced sodium. Sugar free popsicles, sherbet, jell-o.

3. In moderation, I can have 2 cups of the following, Gatorade, juice, skim milk and diet soda.

Two days into it and it is not to bad, I drink alot of Water also.

I just keep telling my self that this is the last time I will have to Diet !!!!!

The band will be my tool forever.

Lois

Julz, you shoudl think about adding some real Protein drinks to this mix. Carnation instant Breakfast is NOT a high-Protein Drink. There are loads of delicious options out there, including SlimFast Optima. Good luck!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
