Had surgery on 5/26, still pain at site

Recommended Posts

I had the RNY surgery the morning of May 26th. Every day I have had slightly less pain, but my one surgical incision on the left is still painful. It doesn't hurt unless I am moving and the pain is a burning internal pain. The incision is not red or swollen and I have no fever. Is this normal?

I had RNY on Apr-13 but no problems with laparoscopic sights. I didn't need any pain meds once I was home. If it were me I'd call my surgeon tomorrow - don't take a chance. Good luck.

Yes, it is normal. It is MAJOR surgery and you are only on day 4. (I recall day 4 and 5 being my worst.) Try to be patient. Use some ice or heating pad and take your pain meds if needed. It gets better but give your body time to heal.

I had my surgery on 5/16, and that pain on the left side is still there... kinda like when you drink Water and then run, you get a stitch/cramp...

It's normal, and can last up to 4 weeks... of course, if it gets worse, you should definitely talk to your doc.

Mine is better everyday too. I still can't sleep on my left side though... which is my favorite. I look forward to the night I sleep on my left side! Ha!

I had a JP drain on the left side and it took a little while for that one to feel better. I think that pain is normal. As long as it's not red or swollen. Good luck

I had my RNY surgery on May 27th. I remember the Nurse telling me that the upper left incision would be the most painful because they went through more muscle in that location. That may explain the deep pain.

I had RNY on 5/23 and still have tenderness in my upper right belly. It gets better every day but definitely not something I'm super concerned with. We just had our insides scrambled. It's going to take some time to heal

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
