Had the sleeve and hiatal hernia repair on 5/25. Immediately after surgery I was not feeling to great, felt like bad stomache cramps. Once back at my room i was given a couple different meds via the IV for the nausea and also Dilaudin for the pain. Within a few minutes the majority of the stomache cramp pain was gone. I could tell when the meds were wearing off and I was getting ready for another dose of Dilaudin, but nothing unbearable. Have felt a bit better each day since. FYI, the drinking gets a lot easier as each day passes also.

@ - I had a small cyst removed on my finger about 10 months before I had my sleeve surgery. Other than my wisdom teeth I have never had surgery either.

Talk to your surgeon and see if you can get something pre-op to take. I COMPLETELY trusted my team so I was ok, still a bit anxious, but I also requested the first OR appt. I didn't want to sit in pre-op and THINK about it anymore than possible.

Follow their instructions and you will be fine, ASK any questions/concerns you have so that you will feel a bit more relaxed.

Good luck and keep us posted on your progress :D

I just has the sleeve and a hiatal hernia repair on Monday. The gas pain has been horrible, but is getting better every day. I didn't want to take the oxycodone but the nurse told me not to be brave and take it. I feel much better after a couple of hours.

I have never had surgery before so I am a bit freaked out and worried

of course you are! I was the first time I had surgery too. but most of the time you will be fine. just be honest with your team and most especially your surgeon and anesthesia so they will know how to take care of you. and keep us posted about your journey.

2 LEEPS and 1 cervical biopsy....5 out of 10 done without anesthesia and Mo..Fu...er they hurt!

Endometrial Ablation 2 out of 10....outpatient no pain meds needed.

Gallbladder surgery 2 out of 10....discharged 2 hours postop needed no pain meds.

VSG 2/3 out of 10....discharged 16 hours postop, still no pain meds needed.

Cervical vertebrae fusion surgery....8 out of 10, with a couple moments of 9/10. LOTS of pain meds required.

Gallbladder attacks before surgery 12 out of 10. Meds couldn't touch the pain.

I had lumbar fusion surgery this past November so I know what you're saying there! I woke up in recovery and the first thing out of my mouth was "why did I do this!"

This has been an interesting thread for me. It really seems that the amount of pain is so individual.

I've had three children, each all natural, no pain meds at all. Easy peasy.

I had my gallbladder out laparoscopically and they had to give me dilaudid while in the hospital because I was in such pain. I was on oxycodone for almost 2 weeks after because the pain wouldn't go away. I literally couldn't stand up straight for over 2 weeks. Worst pain ever.

I really really hope WLS doesn't hurt like that.

Sounds like my experience was different from most others. When I woke up after surgery, my pain was an 8 out of 10. I also had a lot of nausea. My caregivers helped me get both under control quickly. I fluctuated between a 3 and 6 out of 10 for the next few days while I was in the hospital. The gas never bothered me that much. I was most bothered by an allergic reaction I had in the hospital that left me covered with an itchy rash. It took about two days to calm down. My hospital room had a white board on which my nurses wrote goals for the day. I kept wanting to cross out "control pain" and change it to "stop f***ing itching." I took oxycodone for a few days after going home. I believe I was off pain meds around day 6.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
