Okay, so I have read all the suggested diet plans for post-op. This may seem silly, but I am most concerned with having to give up coffee. When I don't drink some form of coffee, I get terrible headaches. Did anyone drink coffee after surgery???

some plans allow it, some do not. I felt like I should wait to see if I was getting all my liquids in.

so at the least you will be without it for some time. it helps to wean off it slowly during pre-op to avoid the headaches.

Thanks for the info ladies. I would drink it black if I had too. I was just not sure if there was an effect on the stomach from the caffeine

I get headaches as well without having coffee. But I think it is usually due to the lack of caffeine. I LOVE my coffee. However, one of the biggest complications from bariatric surgery is dehydration, which caffeinated beverages are not a help. So....my plan is to go Decaf at least for 1/2 my coffee 2 weeks prior, then all decaf for the week prior to surgery. And slowly add back in decaf coffee after surgery until I can get in all my liquids....then back to regular coffee slowly. I have no intention of staying off of it forever. Have I mentioned...i LOVE my coffee. Good luck.

A lot of people get headaches when they give up coffee because they don't replace the coffee fluids with other fluids and they are dehydrated. Contrary to what a lot of people think coffee does not dehydrate you. If you give up 2 to 4 cups of coffee and don't replace those fluids with other fluids to source of your headaches are lack of hydration, not the lack of caffeine.

I have coffee, and a lot of coffee, starting on week 1. My gastroenterologist actually recommended coffee daily for me. I think it does have a diuretic effect, but not so much compared to the actual diuretics I have to take. Coffee is really good for the liver, so I make sure to drink a few cups daily. I also take my PPI, as directed.

When I was still early pre op I started with caffeinated crystal light and tea, in smaller amounts, and then worked up to my current consumption.

You're right that coffee doesn't dehydrate people, but the headaches are actually due to acute caffeine withdrawal:) Though we don't realize it, our bodies are super sensitive to caffeine...and over time, the lack of it.

My NUT doesn't allow caffeinated coffee because caffeine also has a mild diuretic effect and it may increase chance of ulcers, H pylori and acid reflux. Im ok giving up my coffee... totally understand that others might not be, however.

coffee doesn't officially dehydrate, but due to caffeine's diuretic effect, it doesn't hydrate you as well as Water. You would have to increase your Fluid intake if you are drinking caffeinated beverages. Headaches can be due to dehydration AND caffeine withdrawal. I don't know why the theory would be if you are not drinking your coffee you are not drinking at all. But anyhow....I plan to wean off the caffeine preop and eventually go back on. Coffee isn't the best choice.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
