What to expect at the psych evaluation?

Recommended Posts

I have my psych evaluation on Tuesday May 31 and he said it'll be about an hour and we will go over 175 questions and a standard interview. What kind of questions can I expect? I have a degree in psychology so I understand what they are looking for, but 175 questions!?

Mine was one of the standard personality tests, multiple choice. I.e how frequently have you thought about harming yourself etc

Then I spoke to the psychologist for 10 minutes and that was that.

I had to do the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory and it was either 500 or 800 questions. So I'd take 175 anyway.

The interview was just basically what diets have you tried, what are you expectations, what's your biggest fear about the surgery, etc. It wasn't anything to be worried about really.

My eval was pretty chill. My doctor gave me a letter to say what it is they might touch on but it felt really casual. She asked me about my weight loss attempts and my relationship with food, and my personal relationships (support system). She also wanted to make sure that I was aware that this was a tool and not a quick fix and that I wasnt abusing any substances. Maybe it was just the lady I saw, but like I said she was pretty chill.

They will ask you diet history, obesity history, eating disorders, and alot about what you know about the surgery from before, during and after and support systems.

Or they might spend a good chunk of time on the phone with their son discussing what to with leftover food, no this wasn't a staged phone call.

I was rather surprised at how unprofessional this was.

Hope it all goes well.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
