I get the impression that for many, they see WLS as the end of a long journey. It is a process to decide if surgery is right for you, then which surgery to have, and finally you have surgery. Where the thinking is wrong, is that surgery is the end of the journey when in fact it is just the beginning. Your surgery will be with you for the rest of your life. Whether you lose 9 pounds or 19 in the first month is immaterial when you understand that surgery was just the end of the beginning.

I love this post. I am thinking about the WLS. I have to remind myself that this surgery will be a tool and not a fix it forever procedure. I lost 60#'s on WW in a year. I really worked the plan. 3 years later I've gained 40 of it back. I keep thinking I don't want to go back to tracking every bite, every liquid and exercise I do. I'm starting to realize that this is exactly what I will have to do if I have the surgery. I have only just begun to seriously think about WLS. This forum and all the people here sharing their journeys is amazing. I'm so glad I found you :)

OP-I weighed 193 on the day of surgery, 8/31/15, I lost 7lbs in the pre-op diet, so technically started at 200. This is the best decision ever. I "only" lost 17 pounds in the first 30 days, but I was down a full size so I was pleased. At 3 months out I had "only" lost a total of 30lbs since surgery, but nearly 40 with the pre-op diet, but I was down 4, almost 5 sizes! Yes, the loss was "slow" compared to some standards, but fast compared to what I could lose before. It's about perspective. My original goal was 140-145, giving me a few pounds to bounce around with. I am now just days from my 1 year surgiversary, and I l weighed 132 this morning. The last 10-13 lbs have come off slowly over the last 4 months and not really intentionally. So I'm well below my goal, even more below my surgeons goal. But I am happy, I am healthy and I don't regret this decision for even a second. It's truly the journey and now I have to figure out maintenance. I know this year is now all on me. I still follow the Protein rules and stay low carb, mostly because I just don't have room. My carbs are veggies and maybe a bite of potato, rice or bread, but not until most of my protein has been eaten. Have I had cake? Yep, but rarely and a few bites is all I need or want. I look at it now that I must eat this way to be healthy. Do I wonder if that mentality before surgery would have yielded the same results, sure, but I know that if, and that's a big if, I had been successful, it would have been much more difficult and taken a lot longer.

So to the original question, for me it was worth it. My health is worth it. My best advice is to realize, this is your journey and yours alone. Comparing yourself to "normal", will make you crazy and it's just not worth it or fair to you.

I love this thread. It is so encouraging, because we hear "everyone's journey is a little different" and that's how our stores sound - a little different. However the over-arching theme sounds the same: WLS has been a great decision for nearly all of us, and if we follow the plan we lose weight and can maintain that loss. Pretty simple plan, dedication and commitment are required. Thanks everyone for sharing. I'm 10 days post-op.

I have to laugh when the deli lady cuts a slice of turkey and gives it to me to eat. And then says here is a slice of cheese. And I was full! Guys! I am so thrilled with this one aspect of our new sleeve. So what if I'm lower BMI, I had several friends say you've done this before. But so much about me has changed. I'm sick of the roller coaster ride. I want the help! I couldn't do it without the leg up! Thank God!

Quick update. So, I didn't have a lot of weight to lose by many standards, but this weekend I realized I lost 41 inches, while losing "just" 68 pounds.

I was sleeved 3 weeks ago. I started off 200lbs and am down to 180 The progress does slow down, but when it does that's when you start walking and putting a bit more physical effort into it. That makes the weight continue to drop. Also, don't forget about all the health benefits! Preventing heart disease, reversing weight gain, leaving and avoiding obesity, I could go on and on! I know it doesn't seem like 5-10lbs is much, but the closer you get to your goal, the better you'll feel. Believe me!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
