Surgery is on June 6

Recommended Posts

I have struggled with my weight my entire adult life. I lost more than 120 pounds in my 30s, only to gain it back plus MUCH more in my 40s and now 50s. I turned 55 last month. My daughter is expecting her first child in September, and I want to be able to pick up my grandson and play with him. I want to BE there for my family. And I want to ENJOY living again.

I have arthritis in both knees; sleep apnea; high blood pressure; stress incontinence; asthma. I have been pre-diabetic for a few years but have never crossed the line into full blown diabetes, thankfully.I need to have this surgery, or I will become disabled. And to me, that would be worse than death.

At my bariatric surgeon's office last week, my weight was 338. It has just kept going up. I started my pre-op diet on Sunday, May 22, and I am now at 326 already. I can tell I am shedding a lot of bloat and Water at this point. My knees already feel better. It has been a hard 5 days. I am hungry and cranky and fighting headaches. I miss my coffee! But I remind myself that if my choice is to drink coffee whenever I want or to be healthy again, there's no question what I would choose.

I look forward to being part of this forum and finding inspiration in the weeks and months ahead.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
