I'm scheduled to have my surgery May 31St. I had an EKG done today and was told that it was abnormal. I was already scared but now I'm even more scared to follow through with this surgery.

Don't stress too much until you see an expert. My husband was sent in for heart testing after his doctor thought he heard a slight murmur. The tests came back abnormal, but the cardiologist said it was very minor. It turned out my husband had a minor defect on one of his heart valves.

I agree! Don`t get too worried until you talk to a cardiologist about it. Mine came back abnormal, turns out they told me I have a valve that just has a slight flutter to it. Nothing to be concerned about nothing anyone would have even noticed had it not shown on the EKG

I had an irregular EKG too. This ended up delaying my surgery by 3 months. I had to go in for all these tests and eventually had to have a PET Scan with stress test. I was really scared that I had ruined my heart with all the excess weight. They kept asking me when I had my heart attach. I told them that I don't remember having anything like that. Then they told me that sometimes women can have silent heart attacks. Well--- the wait was terrible! After the scan I was told that while my heartbeat is not "typical" it is normal for me. My heart worked just fine under stress. Now I just need to be sure if I have an EKG again that I get the technician my "normal" test so they can compare the two. Our bodies are all unique. Hopefully you will get the same news I got. If not, you at least will know where you are and be able to do what is needed to be the most healthy that you can be. Good luck!

@@Marissela - I had to do a stress to because of a blip the saw on my EKG. I was told about 25+ years ago that I had mitro (sp?) valve prolapse and thought that was what they were seeing on the EKG. A MVP is when your valve doesn't close properly and allows blood to flow incorrectly is my understanding.

For years I pre-medicated for dental cleaning appointments as there was concerns that bacteria from cleanings could cause more damage.

As it turns out I never have had it, my heart is very healthy :D

Don't panic - relax.

I'm a former paramedic and ER nurse. There are about 1,000 reasons for an abnormal EKG, and a *huge* number of those are benign. If you aren't having symptoms of a heart problem, then there's a really good chance it's going to just be something to have monitored intermittently throughout your life.

I had a reaction to medication and developed a highly irregular EKG, and needed a minor procedure to fix it. (Though I admit it's a bit odd to use the word "minor" in relation to a heart procedure, but it really and truly was minor.) Because of this history, I have to have a stress test to clear me for surgery, so I saw my cardiologist this week. I still hold the record in his office (and he specializes in rhythm disturbances) for the number of irregular heartbeats recorded. (For the medical types out there, I had 59,507 PVC's on a 24-hour holter monitor.) I'm 4 years out from the procedure, and I have zero symptoms and my resting EKG is completely normal now.

So, even in the very slight chance there is something going on that needs to be corrected, please rest assured that the experts have lots of options open to them. At the very least, don't stress about this until you have more testing done.

My "normal" EKG is "abnormal" to the "norm"... It has been since birth and will continue to be until death.

Pre-op for any procedure is deferred to cardiology notes and views within my medical record.

Some of us just live to with a heart of a different beat. :)

Just have cardiology review your case and go on from there. --just another bump in the road of your WLS journey.

All will be well.

Keep posting. We care----and are really nosy!

Prayers going up.

YIKES! I am glad that turned out well for you! I have an irregular heart beat - especially when stressed. It's in my medical records so that when new doctors find out about the weirdness they can know I've had all the tests and this is what it is. Still scares me when its happening though. it's like it stops beating like it's stuck for a moment and then it catches up. and an innocent heart murmur.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
