Um...where is my appetite?

Recommended Posts

Yesterday marked 8 weeks post op for me and for the most part- I feel great! But I do have one question for all my RNY pals...when did your appetite/hunger return? In these 8 weeks, I have truly felt "hungry" once. And it was because I slept later than usual one morning (11 hours total ) and felt a slight bit of hunger when I awoke.

With that said- I was prepared more to fight the head hunger that everyone talks about. And I never imagined I would have to FORCE myself to eat. It's great for the most part except, there are times when I have to make myself eat and it just makes me nauseous. I rarely struggle with head hunger as well [knocking on wood]. If it were up to me, I wouldn't have to eat at all with how well I feel.

But we all know that's not healthy ;)

Personally, my hunger returned at 6 weeks, but according to my surgeon's office that was far earlier than expected. They assumed that it was because I was only getting half of the calories I was supposed to at the time, however even after getting those up to standard the hunger remained.

I have to say, I'm happy to have it. I'd thought that one of the perks of surgery would be not feeling hungry for a length of time. Now, however, I realize that I would not be doing as well without it, as I am definitely one of those people that would not be eating enough without my appetite nudging me in the right direction.

In about a year. But for me (3 years post-op) my hunger is still fairly weak in comparison to pre-surgery.

I know what you mean, although I am only 2 weeks post op, I have no hunger which I could never even imagine before... Before surgery my hunger was so horrible, I mean it was just out of control... I am greatful I am not hungry but yes it makes it hard to intake the Protein and Water to meet the goal.

I feel like I can finally relate to "eat to live not live to eat"

I went somewhere yesterday where they brought fresh doughnuts and before surgery I would be fighting the temptation... Now I could care less... Since everything has been extra sweet to me after surgery just the thought of eating a doughnut was starting to make me nauseous... It's incredible :)

I get head hungry where I think I can eat a "normal portion" such as a whole chicken breast, and after like 4 bites I'm done. As in real hunger, I don't really get it. I just look at clock, decide it's whatever meal or snack time, and eat my item.

I had no appetite for about 6 months and then it slowly returned. I definitely get hungry now, but the level of hunger is so much lower than in my pre-surgery days. I think it is one of the best things about having the surgery. I am no longer find myself feeling like a "Starvin' Marvin" looking for anything I can cram into my mouth.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
