provenzee 262 Posted May 25, 2016 Thanks everyone. A normal weight for my height is around 126lbs..but even as a teen and in high school I was always 180-200. It's hard for me to even imagine being 126!! I suppose that as long as I feel better, then my BMI won't matter. 172, and a BMI of 29.5 here I come lol. I can't wait to be "overweight" instead of obese! This will be my first time in over 10 years that I won't be obese! Wooooo!!
KristenLe 5,979 Posted May 25, 2016 @@jess9395 I apologize if my comment came across as "skinny bashing". I did not intend for it to sound that way. You look incredible and not skin and bones at all. However - I don't think BMI is a good measure. I know I don't want to weigh as little as 104lbs.
provenzee 262 Posted May 25, 2016 (edited) I've mentioned this in another thread or two, but my original goal weight was 155 - right at the upper end of a normal BMI. My surgeon stated that she'd rather see me in the 170's on account of my body type, which is well into the overweight catergory. The GP I saw in my late teens also told me that I shouldn't be below 170 for the same reason, but at the time I was young and stupid and just wanted to be a size 2. I am no longer young and stupid and wanting to be a size 2. If two different doctors of two different specialties in two different countries agree that below 170 is not right for me, then that's just fine. Overweight or not. Those sound like my stats as well! What is your height? Edited May 25, 2016 by provenzee
audaciousmarie 165 Posted May 25, 2016 I was just wondering if anyone else's goal weight still leaves them in the overweight or obese range according to BMI. My goal weight is 172lbs, which would put me at a BMI of about 29.5 (still overweight). When I get there, I might decide to keep going to 155lbs, which would still leave me overweight with a BMI of 27.5. Is anyone else in the same boat? Do you think we should be aiming for "healthy" weights?Yes. And thats what is making me wonder if the sleeve is best option for me because my doc says I might still be in the 200s. And I do suggest you reserve judgement till you get there. You might surprise yourself and find you way easily to 104 and actually like it. I never thought I'd want to be below 150. jess9395 5,449 Posted May 26, 2016 Crazy. I really don't have a goal weight!! Hmmm. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App I think that's not a bad idea. I didn't have one either, just a vague idea of how I felt/looked at a certain weight and hoped to get somewhere near there. My doc never set one for me outside of the "most people lose about 60-70% of their excess body weight" and that he considers that a success. I lost more than 100% in that I a firmly in the middle of the normal range for my height.
LipstickLady 25,682 Posted May 26, 2016 My doctor didn't/wouldn't set a goal weight either. He said my success was up to me to determine. I chose single digit pants size.
Diana_in_Philly 1,426 Posted May 26, 2016 The BMI chart has me "normal" at 130. I say I'm 5'3" but on a good day I'm 5'2.5" and will probably be shorter when this is all done. The last time I weighed 125 was when I was competitively figure skating pairs in the late 70s. I was in my late teens and training 4 hours a day. I could eat no more than 2000 calories to stay at 125 with that training regimen. (My partner complained of lifting me if I was over 125). I'll be happy if I get to 150, which I haven't seen since before I was 30. You have to do what's right for you and your body and what your docs think will work for you. adrinanna 46 Posted May 26, 2016 Who set your goal weight? My doctor did not give me one but asked what I expected. I gave a weight range which I guess was realistic but if we go with stats I would still be overweight but because of how I store fat it will probably be ok
