When did you start protein bars?

Recommended Posts

Two questions...

When did you first try Protein Bars?

Did it go down OK?

I'm 5 weeks out, and on soft foods, so no Protein Bar for me yet. However I know pre-sleeve they sometimes did not sit well, so I'm curious how they are for people post-sleeve.

maybe 10 weeks out or so? because I walk A LOT and sometimes need a little boost to calories/protein. I have only found one I like, and it is a treat for when I am extra active, not a daily thing.

or when my hormones make me a stark raving lunatic, because the one I like is also chocolate.

I started literally the day I was allowed solid foods. For me that was 40 days post-op. I only had one and it took me a full hour to eat, but so worth saving myself a Protein Shake at that point. I was SOOOOO done with Protein Shakes. Of course, I still needed to keep supplementing with shakes in those early days, since I still couldn't eat very much. But I did fully transition from shakes to bars as quickly as I was physically able.

After 2 months post op. My dr says no to them because of the high carb. He recommends only 20 carbs a day till goal and most Protein bars would put you over that. However I do every once in a while have one when I'm doing a long workout or as a Meal Replacement. I have no problem getting them down.

I had to wait until about 6 weeks because of the small bits. Even then, I could not eat more than 1/2 of one.

Quest bars were tried around the 4-5 week time frame.

When chewed well they dissolved nicely. Some of the other brands i've tried we not so easy to handle due to them bing clusters of nuts, berries or granola....not to mention the unwanted carbs.

I am looking forward to the Oh Yeah Protein bars. I think they are only 1 net carb.

I've only had a couple of them and usually at races where they are the snack item when you cross the finish line. Not something that I would purchase on my own due to carbs and calories, but they were there and I needed something in me. Plus I typically only eat about half of it then throw it away from disliking it.

The ones they give at finish lines are very high in carbs because those macros are good for recovery. Things like Cliff Builder Bars, Kind bars, Lara Bars, bonk breakers and such (in my experience). So two totally different things.

The ones most people are talking about are much higher Protein and lower carb-- Quest, Combat Crunch, Think Thin, Power Crunch, Oh Yeah. They typically have like 20-22g Protein and 5g or less of "net" carbs if that's what you count... If you don't it's still only 1-2g sugar tops and around 10g Fiber.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
