New post-ops.....what are you eating/drinking?

Recommended Posts

I was just advanced to the mushie food stage at my 2 week post op visit on Thursday. Unfortunately, my hunger has returned completely and I won't get a fill until 8 weeks post op. I'm eating a lot of Soups, mashed potatoes, and now tuna and chicken salad made very fine in the food processor. I've lost 23 lbs. since I started the preop and hope I can at least maintain that until I get a fill. I know the focus now is suppossed to be on healing and not losing, but I'm off to a good start and would like to keep the momentum going. This is the hardest phase so far for me because I am really hungry, but still very limited on the things I can eat. I don't mind mashed potatoes and gravy, but how am I going to lose weight eating that kind of stuff? I know it is just another part of the journey, but I can't wait for that first fill. Becky

Becky, try to find mushies that have more Protein in them. I use this stage to explore the marvelous world of soft cheeses, pates and spreads, hummus, liverwursts and all the other yummy things that normally seem like Condiments. They're densely caloric but can have lots of nutrients in small amounts too, and that's what you want. Go to somewhere like Trader Joe's or a high-end supermarket and look at the deli counter with new eyes. There's lots of amazing stuff out there!

Another good thing for mushie stage which was recommended by my doctor was fish fillets. I have been getting Gortons frozen fillets which come in flavors such as lemon pepper, lemon butter, garlic butter and salmon with lemon butter (my favorite). Also instead of mashed potatoes try mashed sweet potatoes. They have more nutrients than regular mashed potatoes.

Thanks Alex and PammyCakes. Those are good suggestions and a reminder to think outside the box is just what I needed. The doctor's office just gave me a list of example mushie foods and I was thinking of only those foods. You are so right about the options. If I start "looking with new eyes" I know I can find some interesting variety. We don't have Trader Joes here but we do have some great food stores. I just need to get out and look around. As usual, ya'll have been a great source of ideas and advice. Becky

And I don't like the constant tastes of those things that I can eat/drink. As I said....this is just me.

You're not alone. I just posted a similar sounding lament on a new thread, without realizing yours was here.

I'm just trying to figure out ways to make it interesting.

I'll die of boredom way befoe I die from malnutrition!

I think I remember seeing a can of BEEF broth in the kitchen -- at least that's a new flavor. My tongue will be so happy!:hungry:

I don't mind mashed potatoes and gravy, but how am I going to lose weight eating that kind of stuff?

I bought a Protein powder that is tasteless and puts some of that much needed nutrient in potato Soup and only makes it taste 'richer and creamier'.

I'll probably add it to mashed potatoes for the whole family for the rest of our lives!!!

Y'know....I'm having a flash back of my mother -- my grandparents used to get commodities...? Anyone remember that? Big blocks of cheese and stuff. They would give her the boxes of powdered milk that they didn't want. She added that stuff into everything she made, I think! And bought it the rest of her life, long after they stopped giving her the free stuff. Guess that's what she was doing...plumping up the Protein factor.

I have been on full mushies since the third day out. I have lost about 11 lbs so far. Probably Water. What are you guys eating for mushies?

I also have been on full mushies since the 3rd day and I also was banded on the same day as you Karen. Here are some of the things I have been having. Low sugar brown sugar and maple oatmeal thinned down a little bit, Boost atleast once a day, Gortons frozen fish fillets, cottage cheese, refried Beans, creamed corn (is nice as a treat), string cheese, FF Jello, FF pudding, mashed potatoes, mashed sweet potatoes, creamy Soups, scrambled eggs and SF Popsicles. I have lost 20 lbs since surgery. Guess I had a lot of Water to get rid of but I expect it to slow down really soon.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
