Triathlon training starts today!

Recommended Posts

Pretty excited and pumped about starting my 13 week triathlon training today, even though Mondays are my rest days! LOL. I see an exercise physiologist at my surgery center. She designed a training course for me that is very detailed and structured. (I need that!) She spent alot of time researching it. She basically took 3 different plans from the Internet and took parts off each and custom fit it to me. She is young, fresh out of college and I think she enjoyed the challenge of it, which actually motivates me even more, I don't want to let her down!

I picked a long sprint triathlon that is in my hometown in August. Quarter mile swim, 17 mile bike, and 4.1 mile run. I have always wanted to do triathlons since I was in my early 20's, but life got in the way, so now that I am at my goal weight, it's my next challenge in life! Ready, set, go!

That is so awesome! What are you doing from a nutrition standpoint while you are training? I am signed up for a marathon in October and not getting much help from my NUTs.

Good luck!

That is still yet to be determined. I already exercise alot, so my NUT put me on a 1800 calorie a day diet, which is actually pretty hard to do. She said we would monitor my weight once I upped my training and if I start loosing again, she would bump me up to 2,000 calories a day. I use MFP, goals are 150 Protein, 150 carbs, and 65 fat.

@@Ryan TN Think bricks. Start sooner rather than later. PS There are some good tri teachers out there. There is BIG difference between pool swims and open Water swims. Are you on specific tri groups or the like? The other big issue: make sure your legs are in GOOD shape. The swim can work the arms, but then you go from the bike to a run, which is a lot on the legs. Make sure they can hold up.

Let us know your progress.

Remember 37% of Americans can't swim from 1 end of a SCY pool to the other. No matter what, you are in a special group of Americans. :)

You sound like you've done this before so perhaps you can answer my question! I am doing a mini sprint in August (200yd. swim, 7.5 mi bike, 1 mi. run). I will also be in the middle of training for a marathon in October. My long runs for the marathon are on Saturdays and the marathon is on a Sunday. Should I skip my 16 mile run the day before the tri or just not worry about it? I am not competing per se, but I do want to finish and be able to walk afterwards!

Thoughts?

I've got bricks built in to my workout plan starting in a couple weeks, I believe. My exercise physiologist put this plan with my numbers in mind, so I think it's a solid plan, tough, but solid. She doesn't expect me just to complete, she's expecting me to compete! I've also got a couple open Water swims built into my workout.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
