Question about purée food...

Recommended Posts

I have a question what does everyone eat 3 weeks post op? I can't stomach Protein Shakes after surgery.. Tried about a handful, my surgeon/doc said I can start the purée stage. Can you have stuffing on the purred stage, mash potatoes? Also hard boil eggs? Thanks so much.

I'm two weeks post op and I've had mashed potatoes and they go down just fine! Just be very careful and listen to your body! Only a little bit will fill you up. I've also tried watermelon (slowly and picking out all seeds) and it goes down really nice since it's mostly liquid!

one thing I liked very much on my soft foods stage (which would apply here) is touchdown taco dip.

1 can of refried Beans with two garlic cloves grated into it, a cup of shredded cheddar, and some taco seasoning. mix together and spread in a small baking pan.

blend together 1/2 a brick of cream cheese and 3/4 a tub of sour cream (I like reduced fat) and some taco seasoning. spread this on top of the refried Beans mixture. add shredded mexican cheese to the top.

bake at 350 for 20 minutes or so.

usually the family eats this with chips and salsa on top but in the beginning I left the salsa off. I eat it with a spoon.

it is very comforting, satisfying and makes you feel like you are eating real food. BUT. go slow, the line from just enough to I want to die is a very thin line in the beginning and easy to cross.

On my plan I am allowed things like lentil Soups, refried Beans, cheese, laughing cow light, baby bel light, cottage cheese, puréed Soups, runny mashed potatoes, runny cream of wheat and oatmeal. They did recommend if I have one of the last three to put some powdered milk into it so it adds a bit of Protein. Once I am able to tolerate the above items I can move on to things like scrambled or hard boiled eggs, soft fish, canned chicken or tuna, turkey or chicken ground and other things. I tried an egg yesterday and couldn't even eat half of it, it did not sit too well so just went back to the first batch of foods. I still have to have a shake everyday though to get in my required amount of Protein. I am three weeks post op as well.

There is another forum-sorry I don't know how to link it but it is all about the puréed stage and what everyone is eating, maybe try searching for it there will be some good ideas in there.

@@Express09 -

On my post-op list: mashed potatoes & eggs. I ate scrambled eggs with cheese :D

Stuffing was a no.

@Christinamo07 is correct, there is a fine line between full and over doing it...eat a bite (chewed well) then wait a few minutes and eat a second bite. You may only be able to eat 2-4 bites of food.

@@haleymarie I would not have stuffing (bread of any kind should be avoided at this point). You can have mashed potatoes but remember they have no Protein and you should really try to eat Protein first. There's a few things you can have - hummus, cottage cheese, the taco dip @@Christinamo7 gave the recipe too (yum!), refried Beans (with cheese/sour cream), scrambled eggs (creamy), sugar free pudding, etc.

This site has some good recipes for purees:

http://theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com/2007/08/pureed-foods.html

Don't do mashed potatoes! There's no Protein in those! If you aren't drinking shakes, then you need to make ESPECIALLY sure you are eating high Protein food!

@@Express09 - stuffing is too risky IMO as it could form a ball in your new tummy. That is why the soupy type mashed potatoes are allowed at this point, although there is no Protein (unless you add unflavored) value.

I have added flavored powdered Protein to unflavored plain greek yogurt for a pudding type snack. I use 1 scoop (25 or so grams of protein, depending on what you are using) and added the flavored protein to a consistency I would call like pudding.

Mine goes from 3 weeks to 6 weeks

I scramble eggs with cottage cheese to make it soft and it's either that or you have to have soft boiled eggs I can have refried Beans Soups with low carbohydrates and no more than 10 grams of sugar I can have pureed cauliflower carrots stuff like that.

I also could have thin deli meat. But it has to be real deli meat not the processed stuff. I can have applesauce with no sugar. And skinless fruit. No grapes.

He doesn't want us to mashed potatoes or hot Cereal because there's a lot of carbs after 6 weeks we can add that what you have to to fill yourself up on Protein first.

I can also have soy.

I bought some soy chorizo and used it as a meat in a homade chili I made for the whole family they loved it. And of course Greek yogurt under 10 grams of sugar. Same with yogurt. And a half of a banana and only string cheese.< /p>

Hope I helped my doctor gave me a menu.

But remember every doctor is different.

Good luck on your journey ♡

BUT. go slow, the line from just enough to I want to die is a very thin line in the beginning and easy to cross.

This. I discovered this very thin line during my puree stage and it was awful! During the puree stage I could eat anything I could blend to a smooth consistency. My program recommended blended ground meats or soft foods with Protein powder mixed in. Mashed potatoes weren't recommended because of the carbs but they are on my brother's list (different surgical team).

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
