TheDefiler54770 20 Posted May 22, 2016 I see some people choosing to keep their surgery private. Who do you choose to share that info with? I find myself advertising it all over Facebook and to people I know that I'm in a bariatric program since I like the positive encouragement. Have had nothing but positive comments so far. :-) Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
kiwij 4 Posted May 23, 2016 Hi there! I recently had an internal struggle over how/what to tell my 8 yr old son. I think it's important to be honest and open with family and close friends. I know not everybody you tell might agree with what you're doing, but you are giving them an opportunity to support you through this process. People have been positive because they know it's something I've been considering for a long time (and I want to improve my quality if life). I think being open encourages people to ask questions so that they might better understand your choice. Learningtolive 109 Posted May 23, 2016 I only told my husband, my mom, my dad, and a few friends. It's my business and I feel there's that negative stereotype of "taking the easy way out." Nothing about this has been or is easy! They don't know the feeling of the next day not taking in enough fluids and feeling fuzzy and dehydrated or going on a nice lake cruise and unable to eat the buffet because you can only eat so much food. Having to go to the gym and see a personal trainer so I don't get the super saggies and to help accomplish my goal. I keep it to myself. This is my business. I don't need judgments, course my in-laws prob think I have an eating disorder when I have to eat in front of them and can only eat like 1 cup of food lol
TheDefiler54770 20 Posted June 3, 2016 I figured that telling everyone makes me more accountable, since they will be expecting me to make progress. Some of us need that extra push to keep on track. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

sallo 56 Posted June 4, 2016 I told everyone, but I make it my duty to inform people of the struggles & issues to inform them it was not the easy way out.
yncse8 23 Posted June 8, 2016 I only told my husband, three friends. My husband wants tell his Mom but I say no. My HR department knows the real reason but not my boss or other coworkers Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
RouxDude 20 Posted June 8, 2016 I haven't been out front advertising it, but I've told more people than I expected to tell. I can't imagine not telling my kids! My family is in this with me and I need as much support as I can get. I also had to come to understand that this is not only my decisions but one that involves my wife and child. There are significant changes my wife has had to make to accommodate my new diet and eating habits. To deny her the opportunity to talk to someone about her struggles is just being selfish IMO. I've told him that I had an operation to help me become a healthier person. He was satisfied with that. Since surgery, I've told him some more details (size of my pouch, for example) as it comes up. He is my #1 cheerleader and says he is very proud of me becoming healthier. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App
hrmills84 26 Posted June 17, 2016 I'm very open with my surgery. I'm not sure why some people choose to keep it private, but, every person is different. For me, this is part of who I am and is now forever who I am. I'm proud of my decisions. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
