kat27641 34 Posted May 22, 2016 Is there anything I could do? I used to eat bananas and potatoes to keep them away. I have been doing stretches but doesn't seem to be working. Have my 1st post op tomorrow. Any ideas would be appreciated and thanks. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
TipTop in TX 81 Posted May 22, 2016 Are you drinking enough Fluid? Often times the cramps may occur because you're dehydrated. I am two month postop gastric sleeve and I am supposed to get in 64 ounces of fluid. I have not made it there yet. I am sitting around 40 ounces a day. I did have Charlie horses the first week but since then.
kat27641 34 Posted May 22, 2016 I am trying my best. Getting about 40 oz in. I notice I am able to get more each day - who would think it would be this hard? LOL I will get there!
Barry W 336 Posted May 22, 2016 Electrolyte deficiencies can cause muscle cramps - as noted on the mayo Clinic website: "Mineral depletion. Too little potassium, Calcium or magnesium in your diet can contribute to leg cramps." http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/muscle-cramp/symptoms-causes/dxc-20186052
KristenLe 5,979 Posted May 22, 2016 @@kat27641 You will need more fluids. Try getting some with electrolytes like G2 or Mio drops. Fluids can be broth, flavored water, sugar free popsicles, sugar free Jello, etc. Good luck.

AvaFern 3,516 Posted May 22, 2016 If that charley horse starts to make your leg feel warm, hard, red or gets worse, go to the ER. Sometimes a DVT starts off feeling a lot like a charley horse and this close after surgery would increase your risk. Highly unlikely, but something to keep in mind. http://bottomlineinc.com/a-charley-horse-or-a-deadly-blood-clot/

lweaver1 4 Posted May 22, 2016 I am about 2.5 weeks post op. Is it possible you just started walking more and pulled a muscle? I was about 6 days out and had the same issue in my calf. I called the surgeon who said I had to go to the er to be sure it wasn't a blood clot. I was fine it was just a muscle strain. Call your doc you could be one that is actually a blood clot Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N910A using the BariatricPal App

Highly unlikely, but something to keep in mind. http://bottomlineinc.com/a-charley-horse-or-a-deadly-blood-clot/ I don't want to frighten anyone, but this is exactly what happened to me about two weeks after surgery. I noticed when I was out walking I had pain in the back of my leg, similar to a charley horse, that wouldn't go away. My two week follow-up was the next day; they ordered a stat ultrasound and it was indeed a clot. It eventually dissolved (6 months on Warfarin), but as AvaFern said if you're having any symptoms have them checked right away. I don't think it happens in that many cases; I was only 1 of 2 patients my doctor had ever had develop clots.
