Nothing has any flavor...good or bad?

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I am 3 months two weeks out from VSG. I have had no problems except the dreaded "c". The last week nothing has had any flavor. I eat to get my Protein in but could really care less about doing so. I have been very thirsty. My weight loss is steady, not impressive but steady. I started at hw of 344, day of surgery 321 today 269. Has this happened to anyone else?

Are you 269 or 296?

How much Protein do you have eat day and how many calories.

I didn't drop a ton of weight very fast in the beginning. It ws just steady and kept happening with a few stalls. Losing slower has its benefits.

As long as you are eating right don't worry about the scale right now, you are still healing.

I don't know what the dreaded C is? Constipation? If so, yeah, everyone experiences that, I think. Once you get to add in more Fiber, it helps tremendously.

Your taste buds will be off for a while. I didn't really care much about food (other than the stuff I couldn't eat) for the first couple of months, but eventually things start tasting decent again. Still can't eat high sugar anything (not that I want to even try at this point) as it tastes gross to me.

Agree with above replies and had had similar experiences with flavors.

Not sure about C, whatever that is.

Flavor returns but I've found I'm much more picky about food. It's gotta be done right. I've never been someone who's been picky.....until now. I'm a harsh critic of my own grilling and even worse at restuarants. I want my six bites to be tasty.

I don't care for sweets at all anymore. I also can't stand overly salty foods. It's like I can bite into something now and almost give you its ingredient list and nutritional content....lol.

I'm glad for these flavor refinements and pleased that I have strong preferences for foods which are actually much more healthy than those I ate pre-sleeve.

The new ways are better.

I am 16 weeks as of this past Tuesday and have lost 51 pounds since surgery. So if you lost 52 pounds since surgery you are doing fantastic as you had surgery after I did. About the taste and food and eating, I feel as you do. There is no taste to any food and thus the joy I use to have to eat is completely gone. I am eating only to nourish my body. There are some days when I don't even feeling like eating dinner so I have a shake or yogurt. I feel another big reason for the lack of joy when eating is because I know I will have pain and discomfort from eating (which I guess is my signal I ate enough) In the past I never felt that painfulness of being full and thus developed a real joy in eating, I too hope in time the taste buds will come back, the painfulness will decrease and I will enjoy eating again yet know when to stop.

Enjoy the time while food has no flavor. The more weight you lose in the beginning, the faster you get to goal. I am about 2.5 years post-op and I don't really care about food anymore, which is kind of a cool thing. I used to love sweets and while they are still ok, I rarely eat any because they just don't have the same comforting factor as before. When I eat Breakfast, it's granola because I need the carbs so I can go for a walk or a run. I don't really eat meals throughout the day, which I suppose isn't suggested, but around 2 when I start getting hungry, I have a turkey and cheese roll-up because the Protein is good for me and it fills me up. When I'm kind of hungry but don't really want anything to eat, I'll eat a handful of goldfish crackers because they give me some carbs, they taste good, and they are something to chew on. In general I have no real excitement for food anymore- it's just the fuel I use to make my body relatively happy. This has done great things for maintaining my loss and I am ok with giving up my love of food in exchange for a love of clothing.

If you have been low carb all this time, you are into some really deep ketosis. That can make the taste of food off. It improves.

Ketosis is what I was thinking, too. That combined with some foul tasting liquid meds doesn't help. After weaning off of flour, sugar, grease and caffeine, I have discovered the real taste of real food (not factory edibles).

I used to lovvvvvvve tuna salad, but I was adding heaps of Mayonnaise and artificial sweetener. Now that I can discern the real taste of the tuna itself.....not so much.

I used to hate spinach. My mother made wilted spinach with vinegar and forced me to eat it when I was a kid. When I started drinking Protein shakes, my NUT had me add fresh spinach to increase the nutrient content. Once I did that and found out that fresh spinach doesn't have any more flavor than iceberg lettuce, I now use it every day in a salad.< /p>

My taste for food sure did change. Regular sugar makes me gag now. I don't need to add salt to anything, not even boiled eggs or sliced cucumbers. My pallate is entirely different.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
