Did any of you not do so well preop with the diet? I don't mean the actual preop diet right before surgery, I mean the several months before where you have to write everything down. Did that affect you being able to get surgery? I do well sometimes and other times not as well. Does it affect my chances of getting approved? I'm feeling down because of my choices lately and I see my nutritionist again next week

I am learning during this time. I don't need to lose for approval but some are required to. Talk to your Nutritionist to see what the goal is. The reason for the writing everything down is so your NUT can help you to see what could be changed and that you're learning how to eat healthy. No one is going to be perfect. Honestly, if I could do it on my own I wouldn't need surgery.

So much depends on your insurance. I didn't have a strict pre op diet, definately didn't have to journal what I ate.

I know the preop diet is tough but keep thinking about the end results. You can do it

I think a lot of people struggle with that. I certainly did. One of the better pieces of advice I received was to try to focus on changing behaviors instead of just focusing on the diet. For example, start with cutting down on sodas for 1 week, then next week cut them out, then next week add not drinking with a meal, then the next week add not drinking for 30 minutes after a meal, etc. All the habits you have to do after surgery. You will also feel accomplished as you tackle these and those will lead to (perhaps) cutting down on some of your foods. Also, the very most important one (to me) was tracking. Not everyone tracks, but it is truly key to my success. Start now and write down EVERYTHING. I mean every single bite. Even when it is not the right bite. It really helps you see where you are.

And what @@KristenLe said - writing down emotions is good - even if just one word on your food logging app.

Hang in there!! It's a marathon not a race! Start with tiny good habits and then build on them.

I did not have to have a preop diet like this so I do not know.

But I would expect the most people would struggle because we all got here by having food issues. Talk to your NUT about what the goals are - I think that once you know what the rules are you can have peace of mind in your path to surgery.

I'm day 15 post op and other than the fact that I can't eat a lot, or rapidly, I feel like I didn't even have surgery. I didn't have a pre-op diet, but I lost 12 pounds by putting to use some if what I learned in the classes. I don't think you have to be too perfect so just do your best.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
