*If anyone else has been here before, please let me know!*

So my PCP appointment is Monday. I am so anxious and nervous at the same time. Due to recently moving, I have only seen my current PCP once before, for just an initial new patient physical and blood work. (She did note at the time that my blood pressure was high and that I am clearly obese, hence giving me information on weight loss) This time I am going to be bringing with me my bariatric surgery packet with the letter of support for her to sign off on, clearing me for surgery. I'm so nervous she will say that since she hasn't been treating me for long, she wants to see what happens if she puts me on some medically supervised diet. Since I was 13 I've been on some type of diet, with no lasting results. Making it a medically supervised one will not do the trick. <_< I'm trying so hard not to be a negative Nancy, but there is a lot of stress and anxiety with the thought of her denying me. Even though I haven't been with her long, there should be a clear history of at least 5 years of obesity (for insurance purposes). I have been doing all the research I can get my hands on and I have been to the first bariatric surgery seminar. Anyone else been in my position? Any words of advice would be great!

@@martypants My experience has been that most PCPs will not have an issue referring you. If you can, bring any records from former Drs indicating your history of obesity. Many insurance plans require a 6 month supervised weight loss program before surgery so determine what is required by your plan. If you have records or weight recordings from any diet you've done in the past (WW, Nutrisystem) - bring them too.

My PCP is the one who suggested WLS to me.

I second the above statement and you will need the PCP after surgery so go in and let them know where you are coming from. I don't think you will have a problem.

I actually brought it up to my pcp... She immediately agreed and wrote that she thinks I should have the surgery.

also, your surgeon AND/OR your insurance (if that's how you're paying) may require 6 months supervised visits regardless of dieting history.

In the event she is opposed to it, I would ask if the surgeon has a pcp he could recommend..

The fact you were given info. On weight loss says to me the pcp wanted you to take a next step to do something about loosing weight... Getting all your previous medical records sent to her should make her feel more comfortable in writing the letter of support... Good luck

Thank you all for responding!

I had my PCP appointment and she was all for it! Even congratulated me on making the decision for weight loss surgery. Now the process begins :D

I did not have a PCP when entered the program and they have 2 that work with the bariatric team so they are unlikely to try things unrelated to the surgery. Glad I don't have an outside one like you do who might give me a hard time. Glad it worked out so far though.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
