Week 1 post op but can stomach solids...

Hi All,

Couldn't find another thread so will just ask...

I'm exactly 1 week post op and since yesterday (day 6) I've started trying a few 'solid foods' in the UK we're told after a sleeve to have liquids for 3 weeks, then puree for 3 then move to more solid food. But I've always been a quick healer, and for some reason I just knew in my head I felt ok to try something, I've had a thin slice of cheese, a strawberry, a mousse dessert (yogurt) and a small piece of soft potato. All of these I chewed until they basically didn't exist in my mouth before swallowing, but I've experienced no nausea, sickness or cramping.

I understand I couldn't eat a proper meal as I could over stretch whilst still healing, and I am literally nibbling tiny mouthfuls and chewing until I can't even notice the food in my mouth anymore but is this normal? It's becoming really hard to stomach just Soup and milk etc when I feel ready to eat more solid food. I completely understand the risk of rushing the process and I will allow myself time to heal fully but would like to know id this has happened to anyone else?

I would venture to say the majority of us felt ready to eat solids earlier than what our Drs said. Going against their plan is a whole other ball game I didn't want to chance.

It's not only feeling sick that is a concern for eating solids - you have a large incision and staples in your stomach that can catch a piece of food and cause serious complications - you can also develop an obstruction. Please don't "test" your sleeve. I'd hate for you to have complications.

Ok that's scared me back to reality. I guess I hadn't planned on moving onto solid or puree food but you're right even testing is silly!

Everything you ate is basically a slider food, but you don't want to test your staple line. This is temporary. Once you are healed it's solid food till you die

Treat your postop diet restrictions like any other prescription medication. If you had an infection, you'd take your antibiotics. If you were diabetic, you'd take your metformin or insulin. In this case, you just had a large portion of a major organ removed. Following your surgeon's instructions to a T is simply the prescription you need in order to heal without complications.

My post-op diet was liquid first week / purée for the second. Follow your gut if you are ready follow the next step of your diet. Just be careful - I'm allowed cheese and I ate it fast - and the pain was unbearable! Best of luck!

The post op diet is not just a diet to keep you from being sick....like if you've had a stomach virus and the doctor always tells you to just have liquids then add some bland food and slowly get back to a normal diet......That's not what this is!!!

I had surgery this past Monday. I try to picture what the inside of my stomach looks like, and I think about that loooooong staple line.....what if tiny particles of food get lodged in there and cause an infection?.....look at your external incisions, those are tiny compared to the huge one along the length of your stomach.

Take care and follow your doctor's orders.

Take the advice of those here telling you to follow your doctor, if you develop a leak you will be on a feeding tube for months, don't risk it, you'll be on solids soon enough :)

When I follow the instructions coming only from my head then I'm in trouble. If I'm not willing to follow the experts instructions now I know I will fail at this later on.

You are also more likely to get ulcers for the first two months after surgery. Personally after the longgg process it took for me to get surgery I didn't think it was worth risking. I am almost at week 4 and introducing mushy foods and odd things like watermelon make me violently ill. So since things that usually wouldn't bother me now make me feel awful I just follow the dieticians diet for me and pray for the best

My sugeoua off said Clear liquids for 5 days post op then move to solid liquids (creamed Soup no chunks, hummus, very runny cream of wheat, milk, low fat cottage cheese, low fat yogurt, Protein shakes) do that for 14 days, then move to pureed food for 14 days.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
