Had my first post op today....first soft foods too! Yippee!

Recommended Posts

I am 8 days post op and went for my first post op today. I only lost 6 pounds, which I'm not complaining about! I'm just surprised it wasn't more considering what I "ate" for 7 days!! Oh well, I'll take it. :)

Also had first soft foods today. I easily ate 1 scrambled egg today with no problem. For lunch I ate 1 ounce of refried Beans and 1 ounce of cottage cheese. Had no problems again and even 30 minutes later, I just didn't feel like it was enough food. Is 2 ounces of food per meal "normal" at this stage?

This is my surgeons guidance for food progression. It seems should be 4-5 meals per day 1/4 to 1/2 cups per meal as tolerated.

Right now I am tolerating 1/4 cup (I am on. Full liquids), sometimes I measure 1/2 just in case but ending not finishing because I stop and think if I feel satisfied or not.

Weird, I could have written this post today too. I had my first post op this morning, 9 days after surgery. Since then I've eaten one scrambled egg and I'm eating refried Beans right now. I'm eating about the same amount as you are, and feeling fine. I'm actually tolerating this better than my Protein drink. On doctors orders, I'm switching to almond milk. Not sure if I'll be one of those who end up lactose intolerant, or if my body is just taking awhile to like milk again.

Anyway, if it's not "normal" at this stage, then we can both be weirdos together.

Oh wow I'm 2 weeks out and barely ate 1/2 of a scrambled egg for brekky. It's amazing how different it is for each person

I know! It's kind of exasperating for me! My husband, who was sleeved 9 days before me, still has trouble drinking Water in normal amounts and really has trouble with cold water while I can gulp ice cold water down with no problem! !

Well, i welcome having you as my fellow abnormal weirdo lol! For dinner tonight I increased the refried beans to 1/4 cup and the cottage cheese to 1/8 cup. That was more satisfying so maybe you can try that! I am pretty tired of Protein shakes and its only been a week. Aaaagh! I discovered Atkins Lift Protein Drinks and they are good. Have you tried those yet? They have 20 gm protein.

Are you drinking fluids?

You mean with meals? No. No Water 10 minutes before meal or 30 minutes after. Kristen, have you had surgery yet or still in pre op phase?

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
