3 weeks out. Lost weight then gained!

Recommended Posts

Ok so I'm 3 weeks out from my mini bypass. I have managed to lose 9 kg in the first 2 weeks, then stalled which I was expecting but now I've gained 1 kg which is baffling me!! My oral intake is no where near what I used to eat in the past and I am making sure that whatever I eat is either sugar free or low in carbs. I've had a very bad reaction to Protein Shakes so my doctor advised me to stop all Protein shakes and concentrate on my oral intake of Proteins. An example of what I eat in one day is:-

- 180 ml of low fat milk

- 1 egg

- 1/2 avocado

- 100g of puréed meat

- 1 tbsp of mushy peas

- 180 ml of low fat milk

- 1 banana

- 1 small cucumber

I mean I can understand the stalls and why they happen but gaining a kg is worrying to me at this stage..

I didn't do the calculations for you. How much Protein are you actually consuming?

Just make sure you are getting at least 64 oz of Fluid (I am not sure what that is in liters) and are meeting your protein target.

Embrace the Stall

I had RNY gastric bypass surgery which is different than mini-bypass, so my answers may not be of much help. So let's see. You lost 20 pounds in 2 weeks, but then in the next week, you gained 2.2 pounds back.

It is not unusual for individuals after weight loss surgery to hit stalls, even gaining a little weight during the journey. It is fairly common. The three most important elements after surgery are to meet your daily Protein, Fluid and Vitamin requirements. food is really secondary because your body is converting stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight.

It concerns me that you have stopped taking your Protein shakes.

My guidelines read a minimum of 75-90 grams of protein per day.

180 ml of milk is 6.3 ounces of milk which has 6 grams of protein

since you are drinking 2 of these per day, that gives you 12 grams of protein

100 grams of meat gives you 26 grams of protein

1 egg provides 6 grams of protein.

So overall you are consuming 44 grams of protein a day which is much less than your goal.

If you fortify your milk by adding a 1/4 cup of dry milk to each glass of your liquid milk, this would add an additional 6 grams of protein per glass of milk. That would put your total up to 56 grams per day. Still a little on the low side.

It will be hard to meet you daily protein requirement without using Protein Shakes. So I would recommend experimenting with the various forms out there. In general I hate protein shakes. But I had to consume them at least until I could reach my protein requirements from meals alone. You don't have to like protein shakes, only tolerate them. For me I found that I could tolerate Muscle Milk Light (vanilla Cream) powder blended with Water and with a half a banana blended in. So that is what I used.

mmy welcome to my world. My weight is constantly fluctuating and in the beginning it infuriated me. I at times have put on 1.5 kgs, but I know now it's because my body is holding onto Fluid. Our bodies may hold onto Fluid whilst burning fat.

Try not to stress too much and stick to you plan, the weight will come off.

As I mentioned I had to stop my Protein shakes because every time I had them I would get what seems like dumping syndrome. So doctor advised to stop and concentrate on Protein from food

My daily protein target is set at 60-70 grams per day. But doctor said if I can do 40 for the time being that should be fine.

No I am unable yet to meet my daily requirement of Water.. But Proteins I'm trying and almost there.. I have 12g from milk+ 6g from an egg + 25 or 26g from meat that's around 44g per day.. Which according to my doctor is not bad at all given that my BMI was only at 33 pre- surgery.

I have PCOS.. And have always struggled to lose weight. Could it contribute to my stalls and/or Water retention now?

Can you eat Greek yogurt? Cottage cheese? tuna?

You just may need to eat more frequently if you can't get enough in.

Low Protein and low Water will have an impact on your weight loss.

I suggest that it is probably a very good idea to stay off the scale until you are able to get your Protein and fluids up. Until you do so, as far as I am concerned, the numbers on the scale are meaningless.

I actually do eat Greek yogurt, cottage cheese and tuna. Only still in small quantities.. Will try hard enough and hopefully will get there soon.. Thanks ❤️

@@mmy There's no possible way you could have gained fat weight so it is just Water and probably your body retaliating against what it feels is starvation. Definitely get your fluids in and look into unflavored Protein Powder to add to your food or even water. I think the amount you've lost is incredible! Stay strong!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
