Just curious... Is the diet supposed to be low fat, low carb, high Protein? Or just under 800 calories?

It varies considerably, depending on your surgeon's requirements. BTW, this is the pre-op diet that usually is only for two weeks -- to shrink your liver prior to surgery.

I knew the OP was talking about her pre-op diet. I asked because I was thinking that the veggie salads could increase her carb intake. Like I said, just curious- and really jealous, because 7 days of shakes, broth, and Jello is getting tedious, especially with 7 more days to go!

800 calories with high Protein and avoid sugary or fried foods. :) I know it's a lot more lenient than a lot but I'm definitely still going through major withdrawal even with these "easy" restrictions

So I've started my pre-opp / liver shrinking diet ... 13 days.. (now 12) I have to eat 800 calories per day or less.. I'm sure on an average day I chow down three times that (which is why I'm in this position). But basically high Protein, low cal is the goal.. beyond that I can kinda eat how I like. I'm also trying to go from 30 oz liquid a day (roughtly) to 60-70 which is really hard.

So day 1

Protein shake (300 cal with added Fairlife Protein milk)

sugar free Jello

Marinated Vegetable salad X2 servings

Cottage cheese 1 cup (2%)

Fl Oz - 58 oz (protein shake, Water, flavored water)

I'm full of Fluid.. but having horrible head hunger.. I want something like chips or Cookies or..etc - not giving in but miserable.. Of course being full of Fluid means I can't go 15 minutes without peeing.. I'm also really tired and oddly I'm COLD (I'm always hot)

Is all of this.. normal? what else am I going to experience.. does it get easier.. I have 12 more days of this :( I know I should be grateful it's not as bad as a lot of other pre-opp diets but ugh.. it's so little food compared to what I normally eat..

I'm on my first day of liquid diet as well , today I feel fine , I had Protein shakes , broth , Water , sugar free Jello , sugar free Popsicles and I can have a salad , only greens with a little chicken and I'm feel great , let see tomorrow , my surgery is June 2

I'm to start my pre-op liquid diet on Sunda - two protien shakes and one meal - not sure of the calories, I'll find out today. AND I'll have to go get my band unfilled soonish - which is going to be fun.... I hate that needle.

@@Beck90,

Sorry you’re feeling so bad! It’s perfectly normal, though, so at least it’s nothing to worry about. It’ll definitely get better as you stick to it. You’re doing a great thing by developing the habit of drinking more liquid. It’ll help you as you recover from surgery, and long-term it’s a good habit because it’ll help you lose more weight and stay fuller and more energized.

Being cold might last for a while, though. It could be several months as you lose weight pre-op and post-op, since it comes when your body is reacting to having very little food. Good luck with your surgery!

@@Alex Brecher Thanks for the post! I've made it to day five and I'm feeling a bit better!! I'm working really hard to change my liquid intake from 20 oz or so a day to 64 now.. so that part is really tough to get my body okay with it.. but I'm not feeling miserable or uncomfortable the way I did the first 2-4 days .

I'm surprised that the being cold can happen so early! I figured it'd happen after I'd lost 30 or more pounds ! You learn something new every day.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
