How to tell when to upgrade exercise?

Recommended Posts

Starting at 518 lbs, it had been a good while since I had any actual exercise apart from walking to the freezer to grab some Ben & Jerry's. Fast forward to today, I'm doing brisk walking or hiking 3 days a week and 30 min on a rowing machine another 3 days a week. I'm supplementing that with some simple dumb bell lifting. My stamina is up and my joint pain is down. For those that are further along, how and when did you decide to upgrade your workouts to more strenuous activity? At some point down the road, I think that I would like to take a martial arts class, but I'm clueless in terms of deciding when that is likely to be feasible. Any advice?

I'm still pre-surgery, I worked with a few personal trainers in my many attempts to battle weight... I would say the fact your asking this means your ready.. Increase things in small increments... Congrats on your success.

If there's something you want to try, go for it!

Let the instructor know your a newbie.

Often when people start new exercise they can't get through the entire class so they may step out at a point when they feel they have had enough.

You make your own goals and tune everyone else out

Well done on your great weight loss. I think the above poster is right. I started the C25k training program as I felt I needed to up my activity level. I now enjoy running which was most improbable last year before surgery.

Good luck anyway

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
