Post surgery exercise (walking)

Recommended Posts

How much walking are you all doing post-surgery? I am one week out and had my followup visit with the NP and NUT yesterday. I left feeling disappointed with my NUT visit. I'm someone who thrives on positive reinforcement but my conversation with her left me feeling like she wanted me to be doing more. I've been meeting my minimum Protein and Water goals since two days post surgery (usually exceeding my goals most days) and I was constantly walking the halls while I was in the hospital. Since I've been home I've varied between 20-60 minutes of total exercise and 1-3 miles per day. I thought this was excellent but she seemed "judge-y".

Help me feel better about my efforts. :-)

I think you are doing very well for one week out! I was still walking pretty slowly at that time.

at three months out I try to walk 3 miles a day - and a goal of 100 miles in a month. so far my miles per month have been closer to 90.

no doubt walking and other exercise is very *very* helpful, but there are many bariatric patients who aren't even able to walk well - I think the hitting your liquid and Protein goals, and keeping your calories in the recommended amount is going to trump walking.

You may want to just come out and ask your NUT if there is a problem. It may be just a personality issue with your NUT. I for one have been very open with my NUT and ask immediately if there is a concern on my part. I think you are doing fine. I was walking the evening of the surgery and have been walking nightly about a mile. My NUT knows this and only encourages me to do more as I can.

Just talk and be franks with your questions so there are no assumptions going forward.

Brian

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
