My wife and i are both 7 weeks out. She has had a hard time getting food or drinks in in general. However shes been really sick since saturday. Shes had bad diarrhea and saturday we had to take her to the ER. She had extremely low potassium due to the diarrhea. She is still having diarrhea and nausea every day. I am worried. The ER said the diarrhea was most likely from a virus, but she has no other symptoms. We got our syrgery in mexico so we have no follow up care. Has anyone had this experience before or any ideas??

whenever I get sick from a virus I make sure I am having my probiotic and she needs to be very focused on drinking even if it is sips all day long. play around with temperatures if she is nauseated due to sometimes warm feels better, sometimes cold.

and this is probably an issue for a primary care doctor, so if you feel she is not staying hydrated she should go to her PCP or else a quick clinic to be seen for follow up care.

I like the Vitamin Water zero as she would have some Vitamins too but poweraid zero would help with the potassium level.

She has to stay hydrated - I would go back to ER, its been 5 days, by that's me, unless you can contact the ER doctor she saw Saturday. The diarrhea, along with nausea, can get her potassium level down dangerously low.

@@GSleeve822 Can you contact the surgeon who performed the WLS and see what they recommend? As @@jane13 mentioned - low potassium is extremely dangerous and if she's no better since the ER visit - I'd be getting another opinion. It's too soon after WLS to assume it's a virus. Good luck - please let us know how she's doing!

did they give her a potassium supplement in the ER? I had a nasty case of cellulitis a few years ago and got very dehydrated and dangerously low potassium levels because of it. They put me on a potassium drip in the hospital after the oral potassium supplement didn't help.

If they didn't give her a potassium supplement, try the Vitamin Water zero - revive fruit punch flavor, it has extra potassium and b Vitamins.

and definitely follow up with your primary doc. low potassium levels are very dangerous - your heart can stop.

Thank you all so much. She is doing much better. We still arent sure if it was a virus or not but basically i forced her to drink Powerade. She also ate a piece of a grilled cheese sandwich, and weirdly enough she kind of perked right up after that lol. I think bc shes been having such a hard time eating anything, that her body was messed up in several ways. So i really appreciate everyones concern!

The dr ended up goving her anti nausea and diarrhea meds too that did help

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
