4/22 Sleeve & Small Hiatal Hernia repair - I'm Still throwing up, dehydrated, can't eat

Recommended Posts

I had my sleeve and a small hiatal hernia repair on 4/22. The first 2 weeks went alright, but the last week has been terrible. I haven't been able to eat for a week without throwing up. I was seriously dehydrated and had two bags Fluid infusion today. When I got home, I took an anti-nausea pill and promptly threw it up. Two hours later I threw up the apple juice I drank today AND the quarter of a nectarine I mashed 24 hours ago. I think there's something wrong, I have pain on my right side at the HH level and I don't think food is getting through. Has anyone else had this problem? My surgeon and his staff are so busy and its hard to get a conversation with them. I think its time to demand something, but I don't know what?!

Hmm thats odd.... i was sleeved two days before you and i am tolerating soft foods (as per my program)

What have you been eating? How have you been eating?

The thing that jumps out at me is the nectarine, for me that would be way to stringy at this stage.

Have you tried going back to pureed foods, yoghurt, etc, taking tiny bites, eating very very slowly?

I wonder if something has caused some inflammation....

I would call them and demand to speak to someone...

Yes, you do need to demand something . . . I would demand in-person follow-up. Maybe you have a stricture?

I have the exact same issue as you. I had an upper GI done and it showed a tightness at my hiatal hernia sight. I go on the 23rd to have it stretched. I can tolerate liquids and Soups and some mashed foods but that is about it. I have been throwing up and nauseous the whole last 6 weeks. I can eat some cheese but supper tiny bites chewed until it is gone and eat very very slowly.

I suggest you "demand" and upper GI to see if everything is flowing correctly.

Good luck...know you are not alone.

@@miterin62 I'm so sorry you are going through this too! Why are they waiting so long to do your procedure? Did they say anything to you about the sleeve making acid reflux worse? Thank you for sharing your story with me, it really helped; I was getting depressed and feeling alone.

My doctor scheduled an upper GI for tomorrow morning. I literally haven't eaten for a week. I was so dehydrated I was confused and it took 6 pokes to get the blood for the tests and the IV infusion yesterday.

The first 2-1/2 weeks were alright, but I had acid reflux; my prevacid caused foam in my stomach and I would throw up if I took it. Dr called in a different dosage but the pharmacy didn't have it in stock yesterday.

Please keep me posted on your situation. My name is Becky

I had my surgery same day as you did and I have had 0 vomiting. I think you may have started eating fibrous foods too soon. I only eat very plain and non acidic foods. Try eating like this and I'm sure you'll feel better. Take care

@@miterin62 Thanks for the advice, had the upper GI test this morning, it was a barium X-ray and really hard cause I throw up so easily.

They found two things. 1. The hiatal hernia repair is swollen, probably from the vomiting that started a week ago. 2. I have a probable stricture in my stomach.

He said to go back on liquids for a week. I'll have infusion again on Friday to get hydration and Vitamins. If the swelling doesn't go down I'll have a "stent" procedure (which is a tube they put down to stretch the tightened spaces).

Yippie! (Sarcasm) I'm just glad to know it wasn't cause I'm a baby or just in my head.

@@rhansen7 I'm glad you were able to get it checked out and that they have a plan for getting you better. But I am so sorry you are going through all of this. I hope it does get better soon.

@@rhansen that is what my surgeon told me. I have a "tight spot" ( stricture. I have a meeting with the GI Dr. They want me to have it "stretched" but I am so worried they will stretch it too much. I had my hiatal hernia fixed at the same time as the sleeve. Maybe that is my issue also. I went back on liquids for 2 weeks also.

My acid refux is terrible and that foam is "gross"...lol lol

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
