How much post-surgical pain should I expect?

Recommended Posts

I will have sleeve surgery on 5/26/16 and I'm feeling anxious, not sure what to expect. I had my gall bladder out 20 years ago. It was laparoscopic surgery, and I had 4 small incisions. I think I was in surgery about an hour. I had virtually no pain from this. My surgery was in the early afternoon and by midnight I was doing laps around the ward. I had some tenderness in my abdomen for about 5 days, but that was it. I am not sure what to expect for pain with the sleeve surgery. I'd love to hear your experiences- how painful, how long did it last, etc. I know we are all different, and I'm willing to take pain meds if I need to- I just would really like some idea of what to expect!

I was sleeve 5/18... my pain was about 2-3 with pain pump. Now that I'm home with crushing pain meds percocet Q 4 hrs and reglan Q 8 and still softener. my pain 4-6... walking helps bring it down to 4... its from left side where he suture the muscle so no hernias. ..

I haven't had WLS yet but I can't imagine it could be worse than the gallbladder pain I had before needing emergency surgery. Holy crap - if I had a sharp knife handy I would have considered taking my gallbladder out myself. I ended up staying overnight in the hospital and had one incision that was an issue (it had to be larger due to size of infected gallbladder) but I don't remember being in that much pain. I am fairly pain tolerant. I also had a similar experience as @@kmorri after surgery to repair a leg fracture - they misread my pain meds order and didn't give me any post-op. The pain was really bad and it took a while for meds to catch up.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
