Not a fun topic at all but I wish I had this info prior to what happened to me today. This post is for all the newly sleeved, you will want to read this.

OK, I was sleeved May 10th and my last BM was on the 9th. I'm feeling really good, the surgery was successful and I never had to use pain meds. I mention this because I was told only IF I take pain meds, should I also take a stool softener. No softener for me, I never needed the pain meds! This morning I had my 1-week post-op Dr appointment where I mentioned I still had no BM. I was told it is very normal and due to a liquid diet, I may not have one until the puréed stage.

About 2 hours after arriving home, my body signaled I had to finally make a BM! My happiness went from this is great to call 911, NOW! You see, I was on the toilet for about 1/2 hour lightly pushing, then pushing harder then to rocking around the seat doing what I could to release the demon inside me... NOTHING worked.

I finally gave up took a walk drank some Water and then the urge to go came back a second time...NOTHING came out. I ended up becoming very dizzy, I started to sweat, I saw stars then everything around me went white! I was passing out from the pain of pushing (hurt my tummy) and from the pain my bottom was feeling (felt like I was passing a small watermelon wrapped with barbed wire). Luckily, my sweet husband came to my rescue with a cold water and ice pack and his shirt around his nose.

He called the nurse and she recommended an enema, some milk of magnesium, and suppositories...yeah, forget the enema you will not be able to contort your wounded tummy properly. You drink the magnesium and take the suppository!!

So, about 10 minutes later and more pain and screaming, I gave birth to something so incredible I couldn't believe my eyes (I see why I was in pain if you know what I mean). Now, I'm literally "pissing" out of my ass, which is in so much pain.

Moral of this disgusting story, take a stool softener no matter what even if you don't take pain meds and , especially if you haven't pooped in 2 days maybe try some milk of magnesium too. I hope this post saves at least 1 persons rump!

Sorry about the butt baby! Ouchy! I have had diarrhea every day since the first day of surgery and I'm almost to my fourth week. I'm pretty sure everything that I eat comes right back out. I am fine most the day just if I eat anything it comes back out and more in a half hours time I will have been in and out of the bathroom 4 to 6 times! Lol the struggles are real.

Despite stool softener daily and regular 1/2 dose milk of mag, I felt that same pain Saturday night. Then it took full dose MOM and enemas. :( One thing they told us pre-op that I now sincerely believe is that many sleevers become pretty deficient in magnesium (which will cause constipation) considering most "normal stomached" people are too. They recommend Calm by Natural Vitality. It's a mag citrate supplement but not as strong as the bottles you get at the drug store. I got some today at my MDs office after I told them about my poo baby today at my 4 week follow up. Just mixed it up and drank it and it actually tastes good! You might ask your surgeon about that as well. I felt bad for laughing as I read your story, but the way you wrote it was completely hilarious!

I have to recommend the squatty potty to all my friends here. Not only has it helped me but my non-sleeved wife (who mocked me when I bought it) uses it religiously!

@@JT1230, I have heard about this squatting potty. At first I wasn't sure what to think about it but I have heard nothing but great things. They sell them at all Bed Bath and Beyond stores too so when that 20% off coupon comes my way, it's mine!

When I was eating salad every day I didn't have this issue but in preparation of the post-op diet, I've been eating Protein first and sometimes find I am full before I can get to the veggie portion. This has caused the same issues you experienced. I've only taken a laxative once in my life and I swore that would be the last time. It was probably the worst experience of my life right after labor pains. LOL I did some searching and came across this product on Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Swiss-Kriss-Herbal-Laxative-Tablets/dp/B00142C664?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00

While I've only used it twice (1 pill each time) it is gentle enough to used on a daily basis. My 12 year old has also it. Definitely made things better!

This was me about halfway through week two. I actually ended up giving my self a tear while straining, a ton of blood, and a panicked call to the Nurse at the Surgeon's office. She gave me a list of laxatives and softeners to get. I sent my brother a text which was basically "Leave work, go to the store, buy all of the things on this list that they have, or I will die here on this toilet." Took all day to finally pass and I couldn't believe how much there was, at this point I'ld been on liquids and Protein shakes for almost a month including pre and post op diets, no idea where it came from. My butt hurt for two - three days.

Also pay attention to the painkillers they give you, a lot of them make the stool hardening worse. I was on hydromorphone and stopped taking it after all of that happened.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
