Am I small? and more Fat mentality issues....

Recommended Posts

i went to target this weekend. picked a medium dress and extra small sweater off the rack. i wasn't looking for xs by the way but all they had was xs or xxl lol. i went to the dressing room and saw myself full length in the mirror and thought holy ****. i think i'm small. am i small? on the daily i feel just like i always felt. like i feel better but still fat. could it be that im not perceived as fat anymore? why is it so important? how do we switch over from "fat mentality" to what's real? to what's actually happening with our bodies right now? am i still viewed as "fat" by society? am i normal now? is a size 8/10 still fat? how will i know when to stop? all the questions you didn't realize would linger so long.....

Well considering it took me a while to realize how humongous I got - I imagine it takes a while to realize you're not big anymore. ;-). it's too bad we can't lose where we want - I hear the ass is always a big loser.

You look great! I am the opposite I don't see myself as fat until I see a picture and then I am mortified but I have not been fat all my life or even very long.

Vegas isn't like that, lol. I know people call it "sin city", but it's not as bad as most most small honky think towns I've been to throughout the last 30 years filled with unhealthy, crack - head, tatted up (not that there's anything wrong with tats in good taste, lol) bottom - feeders. I hate that people perceive Vegas like you portrayed it. But oh well, I guess I can't change that. I find it different living here in Vegas. I never see the downtown or strip area unless I have visitors. I also think there are many health conscious people here, not necessarily fake, like California is perceived, but healthy. Maybe I'm just seeing "my little world" in Vegas and I'm delusional. Either way, keep up the good work and let's just thank God we made it through the surgery and are on our way to better health!

I was so used to seeing myself really big in the mirror, that when I lost 40lb I felt like I was pretty trim when I saw myself in the mirror. Being about 120lb overweight at the start though, I wasn't trim after losing 40lb! In fact, when I later saw myself walking down the sidewalk reflected in a plate glass window, I suddenly thought "wow, who is that guy, is that me? I guess I am still big!" - I wasn't used to that view, so I saw myself without some mental filter or bias, and the reality was, I was/am still big.

It definitely takes some time for your brain to adjust to new norms of self-image. I now realize that my brain had gotten numb to the sight of my obesity and accepted that as normal. These are good adjustments though - you can throw out what society thinks if you want of course - but, the bottom line is that there is plenty of medical evidence that slimmer is healthier in terms of mortality and morbidity - death and disease rates.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
