After surgery I found out I have some nerve damage now in my right thigh on the top side. It is so strange because if you run your nails a cross it i can't feel it and I can tell by doing that where it begins and ends. The problem is beyond the outer skin the nerve pain is absolutely unbearable he put me on Lyrica 3 times a day. And oxy 3 times a day. He told me this sometimes happens after abdominal surgery. I hate being high all the time on oxy. But even with that it still hurts badly just not as intolerable. Walking is bad unless I'm doped up.

Has anyone else had this or heard of it? I will be 4 weeks out in a few days.

Thanks.

Never heard of that associate with the sleeve. It is associated with diabetes though. The incisions for the sleeve are far too tiny to cause such, IMO. It me be due to something else.

I have something similar (but not as extreme) on my right thigh. I mostly notice it mostly at night. I am not taking any medication for it though. It seems to be getting better.

If it's nerve pain there are non narcotic options. I had a severed nerve after wrist surgery a year and a half ago, then more surgery to fix it (which didn't work very well).

Ask your doc about Neurontin. It's specific to nerve pain and it's non narcotic so no "high" feeling. Though the lyrica shouldn't make you feel high either.

Jess9395 the Lyrica doesn't make me high the oxycodone makes me high. And I hate it. I will ask for other options.

Thank you.

I really hope the pain stops soon as you know it is horrible pain.

Inner surfer

When I had an emergency hysterectomy they cut me completely from hip to hip and I had the numbness without the pain for many years. I am glad you don't have really bad pain. The doctor told me it happens but will go away. I hope soon. :)

I have it in both legs--from hip to knee.

I've had it since my spinal reconstruction. Mine is a "numb" feeling with stinging pain associated with it. I had it in my L leg after my knee replacement. It lasted for about 18months.

I, too believe that Oxy is NOT the drug of choice---at least it's not the one I would take. Oxy is just a very easy fix for pain without delving deep for the right med for the right pain.--and it is extremely addictive. MHO

I take Cymbalta which is for "nerve pain". --and it helps without "drugging" me.

Feel better..

I had gastric bypass not the sleeve. That is interesting about the diabetes. My blood test always came out that I was semi borderline. But I don't have it yet in the hospital twice they gave me insulin. And I told the nurse I'm not diabetic. When I asked the doctor about it he said it was a small amount and the body gets stressed and sugar Rises. So it is strange you said that.

Thanks something to look into.

I had that happen a few yrs back after hysterectomy. I had to have a partial and then about 8 mths later they had to do a radical hysterectomy. I woke up unable to walk. Nerve damage in my entire right leg. Months of physical therapy and a walker and wheel chair for almost a yr. (I was 32 yrs old). They put me on gabapentin and it has worked wonders for me regarding pain. I still take it and still have numbness on front part of leg from knee down through shin. I still can't do all I use to do with my leg but so much better than where I once was. I wasn't overweight then, only 125 lbs, so I'm sure that helped with my recovery.

I feel bad for you. 18 months scares me. I do not like the oxy either the Lyrica is suppose to help the nerves but it only helps take the edge off. Everyone is trying to get me to take medical marijuana but then I will really be high. I am really trying to not take the oxy.

Thanks for telling your story. I heard it is common with any surgery.

Reinventing wow I am so sorry that happened to you. I know how bad it hurts. I have a very hard time walking as well especially if the pill wears off. One day it took me 5 times to step up into the truck I just kept falling back. The vibration of my foot hitting the floor hurts. I am really hoping this is not long term. I love to run in 2013 I did my first Marathon.

I would STRONGLY recommend that you try Tylenol in the daytime and only take oxy AS needed for sleep. It is a highly addictive medication. 1 in 4 people who take it WILL become addicted. 3 times a day for more than 3 days is too much. Long term result could be that you are still in pain but also have a wicked and dangerous addiction. Thousands of people die from overdose each year. Most of them started on legit medical dental advice and prescriptions. Families are destroyed. You may want to discuss with a pain management specialist some other options for managing your pain.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
