Forget hair loss problems....I have nail issues

Recommended Posts

I haven't noticed any Hair loss issues ( yet) but I have noticed my nails are garbage! I need to keep my nails painted to keep them strong and even then I'm breaking them left and right!

I upped my Biotin to 5000 a day but wow! I didn't expect nail issues! Lol

I did not experience hair loss at all, but my nails turned to shreds. I was taking 20,000 mg of Biotin. It wasn't until I started having either bone-broth Soup or sugar free Jello every day that they started to come back to normal. That is because of the Gelatin content.

The problem lasted through months 2,3,and 4 and then cleared up. My skin was dryer during that time, too, and I was moisturizing all the time.

Nails reflect our health. They respond to Protein and Vitamin level. Make sure you are getting in all of your protein and taking your Vitamins and supplements as directed (not just biotin).

Yep protein is 80+ grams a day and Vitamins are all on point and blood levels are appropriate

But I have also never had great nails but they are a tad worse now

But...that said I can deal with my nails until they are back up to par it would be harder for me personally,to lose my hair and have to cut it.

I have long black hair , to my waist and it would kill me to cut it ...god that sounds vain! Sorry! Lol

@Nurse_Lenora "I have long black hair , to my waist and it would kill me to cut it ...god that sounds vain! Sorry! Lol"

I'm rather vain too then! My hair is down to the small of my back, and I would hate to have to cut it as well I haven't had surgery yet, but I've started to drink bamboo tea (rich in silica) as a way to hopefully help offset Hair loss. It's supposed to be good for skin and nails too. We'll see how that works.

I always wore my hair long. Not long after surgery I got mine cut off and donated it. I LOVE wearing it short, now.

I, too, have started drinking bamboo tea as well. My hair is already super thin (can see my scalp if I wear my hair back in a ponytail) so I'm hoping the silica will help a little when I get to the hair loss stage. I am already prepared to buy some wigs if need be.

Just to follow-up on my comment #3........Indeed I was taking 80 grams of Protein by that time, and have stayed there. At 2 1/2 years out, my hair is healthier than it has ever been.

Another thing I forgot to add: good fats are also important for hair and nails. If you aren't getting enough fats you will see it in your hair and nails.

I mix 3 leaves of Gelatin with 500ml Water and 1 full scoop of Fuzzy Navel Syntrax nectar. This makes 3 or 4 Jelly's. Not that I planned to use this to get longer stronger nails it was a nice side effect. I was trying something different with the Syntrax Nectar for a change. After a few weeks I noticed I had Long strong nails ! Crazy because my nails do NOT grow. That as the only change I made so it had to be the Gelatin.< /p>

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
