Anyone else not feeling a "burst of energy"?

Recommended Posts

I'm 6 weeks post op and have lost 19.5 pounds (was on the lower end at the start-221.8). I can usually manage to reach my Protein goal daily and get in exercise and whatnot, but I don't feel all this energy people talk about. I am looking forward to that feeling!! Why do you think that is? Is anyone else going thru this?

It can take time. You are still healing.

Just follow your program.

Track your food.

Make sure you are getting at least 64 oz of water/fluid.

Make sure you get in all of your Protein every day.

Avoid starches, added sugars, and fried foods.

Take your Vitamins and supplements as directed.

Get enough restful sleep.

Exercise.

You will start to feel better soon!

Well, I think an equal number of people may complain about lack of energy :-) If that is a problem, I'd ask:

- are you sure you're getting enough Vitamins in your diet?

- are you just eating too little?

- are you getting regular exercise?

- are you over-exercising?

..those are some likely suspects anyway....

Something you both point out that I never considered is that I struggle getting in all my Vitamins. They nauseate me- I've gone through 3 different types now all with the same results.

You can also try the PatchMD Multivitamin patch, or just try to eat a continually varying spectrum of fruits and vegetables every day.

The only burst of energy I had was in the first week once I got to add caffeine back. My weight went from BMI 44 ish, to below 40 so I feel I can move so much better, but I am definitely not very energetic yet.

What kind of vitamins are you taking? Some of the high potency bariatric vitamins make me nauseous. I have better luck with regular vitamins: instead of taking one big pill.

Personally, I chose not to go back to caffeine for energy. Since I successfully weaned myself off of caffeine pre-op, I really don't want that monkey on my back any more.

I think that with healing, hydration, proper nutrition, and exercise, you will eventually have plenty of energy. It just takes a bit of time.

I had trouble with every single Vitamin I tried until my RD advised Flinstones Complete, which are chewables. I take two each day. Bam, no more nausea from vitamins!

My energy level didn't improve until after six weeks. Until about six-eight weeks, you're still primarily in healing mode, which takes a lot of energy out of you.

I don't have any energy either, actually having challenges staying awake...i see my surgeon this week and that is the top of my list to discuss..i do get in all my Vitamins everyday so i believe it could be a specific Vitamin that I am deficient in, hopefully a lipid panel will show what it is.

I also had this problem, in fact, I'd throw up any time I tried to swallow my Vitamins. I switched to gummies and I'm now able to get them all in without issue. I mostly take the VitaFusion brand and Viactiv. Good luck!

It took me about 4-5 weeks post op to get back to my pre op energy levels.

Since I pretty much felt like s**t pre-op, I may have mistaken not feeling like s**t for a "burst of energy." ;)

I second the sentiment that recovering from WLS requires a lot of the body's resources. My recovery was easy, i.e., no complications, incisions healed fast, wasn't in a lot of pain, etc. But I was still very much aware of the fact that I was recovering from major surgery. Make that two major surgeries, since I had my gall bladder removed four weeks post-WLS.

I think my sense of feeling so much better within the first few months post-op was partly due to not eating much during that time. I've always felt better when fasting -- and 800 cals/day certainly qualifies (for me) as fasting.

I should point out that I was 68 and post-menopausal when I was sleeved. Therefore, I didn't have any monthly hormonal cycles or any old stored-up estrogen or progesterone flooding my system as fat cells were shrinking and releasing waste products and other substances during the rapid weight loss period. Those processes surely must mess around with how you react to WLS initially -- all the physical and mental / emotional changes we are undergoing, which are stressful.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
