Swallow or crush pills?

Recommended Posts

I'm 4 days post op. Am I supposed to be crushing my pills I took before surgery such as antidepressants? I have been swallowing whole no problem but I just was thinking about it...

I am also 4 days post op and am crushing mine. Are you hungry? I feel like I'm starving my stomach is growling like it needs food. I started adding watered down cream of mushroom Soup to my diet, not clear liquid but thicker and makes my stomach feel like its full.

Thanks yall! Yes I'm super hungry but my Dr said it might be from acid reflux or just head hunger. I think it's actual hunger so I'm going to try to do better about taking my antacids and nausea med

Don't crush any pills without checking with a pharmacist first. Many pills will lose their effectiveness if crushed.

It depends. If your pain medication is prescribed as a liquid suspension, call your surgeon/PCP to see when you can start swallowing whole pills. Medications that are extended/slow release tend to have the letters SR, ER, XR, XL at the end. These medications are not to be crushed, you will get dangerous side effects if your body absorbs it all at once instead of over time. Some medications are capsules and caplets to make it easier to swallow, some medications are capsules because it is also extended/slow release. As Bufflehead said, you can also ask the pharmacists. Find out as soon as you can, because the crushed powder tastes horrible.

Yes, please check with your doctor or pharmacist. The type of pill really matters. In terms of general rules, I was told I could swallow anything that was smaller than an M&M. For me that means I only need to cut my metformin pills (they are huge...hopefully I'll be off them soon anyway) and I need to empty the capsule of Prilosec and take with a spoonful of pudding or yogurt. The pharm did need to change my metformin prescription from the extended release version so I could split them.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
