Unmedicated, wide awake Endoscopy?

Recommended Posts

Hello! I am new here and this is my first post! I am in the processing of getting ready to have surgery...working on all of the medical clearance stuff obviously...I am scheduled for an endoscopy that goes down my nose and into my stomach on Monday. They said they do not do anything to medicate you so that you are sleepy/relaxed....nothing! Just spray some numbing stuff and stick it down there.

Has anyone had this done? How was it? (HONESTLY!) I am scared!

That's crazy. I was fully under for mine. I'd go elsewhere

Are you sure this is an endoscopy?... it seems like this is a manometry test.

I had this done when i decided to get my sleeve...

They numb your throat and nose and stick a fine tube through your nose into your stomach.... and they then give you Water to sip whilst they test your esophageal pressure.

I have never heard of an endoscopy being done without anesthesia.

They said it would be a tube going down my nose, into my stomach to look at structure and look for ulcers/problems. They said most people gag and have a not-so-great time with it. Sounds awful either way!

I just had my EGD today they put me into a twilight and went through my mouth. Ivan remember most of it. It is just hazy.

I would double check with the doctor and ask why she has chosen that procedure over an endoscopy.

That's so strange that they wouldn't sedate you. Mine is Thursday and I will be sedated for it. I had no choice to just be numbed.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
